서정인의 『모구실』 연구 : 오비디우스의 『Metamorphoses』의 변용을 중심으로

서정인에게 소설이란 ‘말하는’ 것으로 해석의 몫이 있는 ‘듣는 사람’이 중요하다. 그는 우리에게 ‘말’이 몸과 생활로부터 비롯되었음을 일깨워 (문학)언어에 대한 사유를 확장시킨다. 『모구실』에는 오비디우스의 『변신이야기』중, 탄탈로스 집안의 이야기와 판디온의 두 딸 이야기가 여러 번 등장하고 있다. 이 이야기를 들었던 이가 나중에 말해준 이에게 다시 들려줌으로써 기억의 이동이 나타나는 것이다. 소설의 ‘다인행-3인행-2인행’의 연작 형식은 인물의 기억이 전승될 때의 과정을 형식화하고 있다.
『모구실』의 핵심 서사는 ‘늙은 아버지의 딸 찾아가기’로 효와 불효의 간극을 보여주고 있다. 탄탈로스와 판디온의 딸 이야기는 자식의 살(죽음)을 이용하려 했다는 점에서 공통된다. 한정된 시간을 사는 인간은 다른 존재(자식, 윤회)로 변신하고 싶어 한다. 미완의 인간이 영원을 덧붙여 되풀이하는 이야기가 신화이며 현대에도 신화가 있다. 채퍼퀴딕 스캔들은 ‘서술의 경계 무너지기’를 통해 재현되고 있다. 『모구실』의 파격적 형식들은 역설적이게도 소설의 서술 행위를 부각시킨다. 서정인의 ‘소설쓰기’는 소설로부터 탈피하기였으나, 오히려 소설의 본원에 가닿고 있다.
Abstract
For Seo Jeong-In, a novel is ‘speaking’, and a ‘listener’ who has a share of interpretation is important. He awakens us that ‘speeches’ comes from the body and life, and expands our thinking on (literary) language. In Mogusil, the stories of the Tantalus family and Pandion’s two daughters are appearing several times among Ovid’s story ‘Metamorphoses’. Memory shift occurs when the person who heard the story retold it to someone later. The series form in the novel, ‘Multi-person, 3-person, 2-person’ is formalizing the process when a character’s memory is passed down.
The core narrative in Mogusil is the gap between filial piety and impiety, showing ‘Visiting the old father’s daughter’. The stories of Tantalus and Pandion’s daughter are common in that they tried to use the flesh (death) of their children. Humans who live in a limited time want to transform into other beings (children, reincarnation). A myth is the story for an unfinished human being repeating over and over with eternity, and there are myths in modern times as well. The Chappaquiddick scandal is being recreated through ‘narrative metalepsis’. The unconventional forms in Mogusil paradoxically highlight the narrative of the novel. Seo Jeong-In’s ‘writing a novel’ escapes from the novel, but rather it is reaching the essence of the novel.
