염상섭의 1950년대 전시소설에 나타난 ‘민족문학’ 연구

염상섭의 문학은 다양한 시대적 격동기에서 탄생했다. 일제강점기, 해방기, 한국전쟁이라는 굵직한 시대적 흐름 속에서도 염상섭은 지속적인 문학 활동을 통해 문학적 세계관을 구축하였다. 염상섭의 전시소설은 그의 50년대 문학에서 별개의 영역으로 살펴볼 필요가 있는데 이 시대에 발표되었던 종군문학과 변별적 지점이 있기 때문이다.

염상섭이 한국전쟁 기간에 발표한 전시소설은 그가 전시에 주장한 ‘민족문학론’이 바탕이 되고 있다. 그는 전시에 ‘민족문학론’을 주장하면서 이것을 수행할 수 있는 구체적인 방법론으로 ‘사실주의’를 이야기했다. 이는 종군문학이 리얼리즘을 통해 추구하고자 했던 남한 이념의 강조가 아닌, 전쟁 현실에서 발생한 민족의 삶 자체를 사실적으로 반영하고자 하는 의지를 내재하고 있다. 그래서 염상섭의 전시소설에는 전쟁이라는 부정적 현실에서 이루어진 민족의 삶을 이념 문제를 희석한 채 반영하고자 하는 서술적 전략이 나타난다. 그의 전시소설에는 이념적 문제에 당면한 인물들이 등장하지만, 그들 사이에서 벌어지는 근본적 문제의 원인은 전쟁 전부터 존재했던 인간적 욕망, 갈등 혹은 전쟁 직후 생존하기 위한 이기적인 내적 욕망에서 발생한 것이다. 이와 같은 서술적 전략을 통해 염상섭의 전시소설은 종군문학과 본질적 차이를 보이며 시대적 아픔을 드러내고 있다.

Yeom Sang-Seop’s literature was created in the turbulent period of various times. Even in the flow of weighty times such as Japanese colonial era, liberation period, and Korean War, Yeom Sang-Seop established the literary world view through continuous literary activities. Yeom Sang-Seop’s wartime novels need to be examined separately from his literature in the 1950s because they show the distinctive point from war literature published at that time.

Yeom Sang-Seop’s wartime novels published during the Korean War are based on the ‘national literature theory’ argued by him in the wartime. Arguing the ‘national literature theory’ in the wartime, he talked about ‘realism’ as a concrete methodology. This is not emphasizing the ideology of South Korea that the war literature aimed to pursue through realism, but implying his will to realistically reflect people’s lives in the reality of war. Thus, Yeom Sang-Seop’s wartime novels show the narrative strategy to reflect people’s lives in the negative reality of war by diluting the ideology issue. Even though the characters facing the ideological issue appear in his wartime novels, the cause for their fundamental problems is originated from human’s desire and conflict existing from before the war, or selfish internal desire to survive right after the war. Through the narrative strategy like this, Yeom Sang-Seop’s wartime novels show the essential differences from war literature, and also show the pains of the time.
