김채원 소설에 나타난 실존적 탐색과 장소성

이 연구는 김채원의 후기 소설을 중심으로 하여 전기 대표작부터 지속적으로 나타나는 정서적 특징과 실존적 탐색의 과정을 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 선행연구를 바탕으로 하여 실존적 탐색의 구조를 재검토하고, 인문지리학적 논의결과에 기대어 실존적 탐색과 장소성을 연관시켜 해석을 시도하였다.

분단성장세대로서 김채원은 전쟁과 분단으로 이산의 고통을 겪었고, 남성 부재의 현실에서 여성 가족원에 대한 모방과 거부 속에 성장했으며, 전후에 유입된 서구문화에 의한 이국취향, 이념대립과 도피의 갈등 속에서 글쓰기를 지속하였다. 이러한 전기적 사실과 문제의식은, 삶의 본질과 근원을 탐색하지만 뿌리내릴 삶의 장소를 찾지 못한 채 되돌아오는 상실과 이탈, 회귀의 서사구조에 피와 살이 되었다.

김채원 소설의 탐색적 구조에는 기원으로서의 집(어머니)에 대한 그리움과 막연한 불안, 비현실적 실체감, 이탈의 무의식적 욕망, 길 찾기에 대한 본능적인 두려움이 공통적으로 드러난다. 여성 인물들은 현실에서 이질감과 외부성을 느끼며 진정한 장소감을 느낄 수 있는 다른 시공간을 상상하여 탐색을 시도한다. 이 실존적 탐색의 과정에서, 여성에게는 뿌리내림의 원천이자 감옥이 되는 집이라는 장소에 대한 지향과 저항을 드러낸다. 이국의 경험을 모티프로 한 소설에서는 세계의 힘이라 믿었던 이그조티시즘의 실체와 자기기만을 목도하며, 세상의 주도권을 넘겨주고 주변화된 채 노년에 이른 여성 분단성장세대의 회복할 수 없는 실존적 외부성을 자각한다. 그리고 급격한 상업적 개발과정에서 규격화와 획일화로 경관을 훼손하고 고유한 장소감을 상실하게 된 현실을 비판한다.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the process of existential exploration that consistently appear from the first major work, focusing on Kim Chae-won's later novels. For this purpose, based on the problem consciousness and results of previous studies, an interpretation was attempted by applying the results of human geographic discussions such as place, loss of place, and existential externality, and main concepts.

In the exploratory structure of Kim's novels, longing for the house (mother) as the origin, vague anxiety, an unrealistic sense of reality, unconscious desire of departure, and instinctive fear of finding a way are common. The female characters in Kim's novels imagine a different time and space where they can feel the true sense of place to escape from existential outsideness. In the process of this existential search, the female characters(or Kim) discover a place called “the house” that becomes a source of roots and a prison for woman, witness the self-deception and reality of Exoticism believed to be the power of the world, aware of the irreparable existential outsideness and themselves who grew old marginalized. And by borrowing the voice of the narrator, Kim criticizes the reality that the unique sense of place was lost due to standardization and uniformity in the rapid commercial development process.
