김석범 대하소설 『화산도』에 나타난 장소와 공간의 의미 : 밀항, 이카이노, 경성(서울)에 대한 묘사를 중심으로

김석범 작가의 대하소설 『화산도』에는 공간과 장소에 대한 정밀한 묘사와 밀항으로 대변되는 불법적 공간 이동 등 공간에 대한 민감한 감각이 두드러지게 드러난다. 『화산도』에서 공간과 장소, 공간 이동은 작품 스토리 전개와 작가의 사유를 전달하는 데 매우 중요한 요소로 기능한다. 『화산도』의 무대는 소설 서사의 주 공간인 제주는 물론이거니와, 경성(서울), 목포, 부산, 일본 도쿄, 교토, 오사카 등을 포괄한다. 『화산도』에 대해 탐구한다는 것은 작품 속의 공간에 자연스럽게 스며든 작가의 문제의식, 장소의 인문지리학을 탐구하는 과정과 연결된다.
실제 김석범은 『화산도』 1부 집필을 위한 현장 답사를 거의 수행하지 못하는 상태에서 기억, 상상력, 자료, 증언을 활용해서 대하소설 『화산도』를 썼다. 제주, 서울, 이카이노 등의 공간에 대한 집요한 탐색과 장악, 기억이 동반되지 않았더라면, 『화산도』가 창작될 수 없었을 것이다. 『화산도』 전권을 통해, ‘밀항’은 가장 빈번하게 등장하는 소재이자 내용이다. 『화산도』의 밀항 장면에는 밀항을 선택할 수밖에 없는 사회 정치적 맥락, 밀항에 대한 정념과 욕망이 생생하게 묘사돼 있다. 『화산도』에서 이토록 밀항에 대한 농밀하고 생생한 묘사가 가능했던 것은 무엇보다 작가 김석범이 밀항을 직접 체험했기 때문이다. 한편 작가 김석범을 조국의 운명과 민족의 진로에 대해 고뇌하는 청년으로 키운 것은 오사카 한인공동체 거주지인 이카이노의 민족적 분위기였다. 한 사람의 작가로서의 김석범의 여정에는 이카이노라는 장소가 깊이 각인돼 있다.
『화산도』에는 해방 직후 서울 중심부와 그 인근의 공간, 음식문화, 거리 풍경이 매우 세밀하고 생생하게 묘사된다. 『화산도』는 식민의 흔적이 깊이 배어든 경성(서울) 중심부 공간에 대한 밀도 깊은 묘사를 통해, 해방 후에도 여전히 그곳이 식민주의가 작동하는 장소임을 극명하게 환기한다.
Abstract
In Kim Seok-beom’s epic novel, Hwasando, his precise portrayal of space and sensitive senses are definitely notable. Space, place, and space movement are very important elements of the story in Hwasando. The setting of Hwasando covers Gyeongseong(Seoul), Mokpo, Busan, Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, and Shimonoseki. Exploring Hwasando is also the process of exploring the author’s awareness of a problem that permeates the space of the work.
In fact, Kim Seok-beom was unable to make an on-site survey, but he wrote Hwasando using his memory, imagination, data, and testimony. ‘stow away’ is frequently mentioned material in Hwasando. This work vividly depicts the social and political context in which one has no choice but to choose secret passage and the spirit and desire for secret passage. The vivid description of the secret passage was possible in Hwasando because Kim Seok-beom experienced the secret passage firsthand.
What affected Kim Seok-beom as a young man agonizing over the fate of his country was the nationalistic atmosphere of Ikaino, a Korean-town in Osaka. Kim Seok-beom’s career as a writer is deeply imprinted with the place ‘Ikaino’.
Hwasando depicts the center of Seoul, food culture and street scenes right after liberation, in great detail. Hwasando clearly reminds us that South Korea is still a place where the shadows of colonialism linger even after liberation, through its dense portrayal of the space in central Seoul, where the remnants of colonialism have been embedded.
