오정희의 ｢파로호｣에 나타난 주제의식 연구
초록
이 논문은 오정희의 중편 ｢파로호｣를 중심으로 주제의식 및 작중인물의 내면세계와 갈등양상을 파악하고, 작품 속에 드러나고 있는 이미지의 상징성을 고찰하였다. 또한 이 작품 속에 내재해 있는 작가의 삶에 대한 인식과 사회현실 인식을 추적하고자 하였다.
이 작품에서 작가는 ‘파로호’를 공간적 배경으로 하여 작중인물의 불안의식, 탈주욕망, 왜곡된 허위의식을 이면적으로 보여주고 있다. 또한 주체적 삶을 향해 나아가려는 작중인물의 내면세계를 텅 빈 ‘파로호’에 들어가기와 생명력의 복원을 희구하는 자기 실존에의 증명을 여인의 얼굴이 새겨진 흰 돌의 이미지와 노인의 등장과 목화씨 등의 이미지를 써서 형상화하면서 ‘파로호’를 채움의 역동적 이미지로 보여주고 있다.
또한 ‘파로호’에서 치러졌던 6.25전쟁의 폭력성과 분단의 비극성을 보여주고 있다. 근대 사회의 개발 폐해라 할 수 있는 수몰지구로서의 상처와 제5공화국이 광주에서 저지른 만행 등을 ‘안개’와 ‘바람’의 이미지 등을 통해 형상화하고 있다. 이는 제5공화국의 광기 어린 정치적 상황에 대한 작가의 현실비판 의식의 발로라고 볼 수 있다. 이로써, 작가가 ｢불꽃놀이｣에서 보여주었던 사회현실 인식은 ｢그림자 밟기｣를 거쳐 ｢파로호｣에 이르러 확장되고 있음을 알 수 있다.
한편 오정희가 그의 작품 속에서 끊임없이 추구하는 자기 실존에의 탐구 역시 이 작품 속에 지속적으로 드러나고 있는데 이는 작중인물의 ‘소설쓰기’ 욕망을 통해 대면하게 된다. 또한 ‘파로호’의 이미지를 중심으로 선사시대부터 현재에 이르기까지 시공간의 연속성을 보여주면서 ‘보이지 않음의 실체’, ‘영원으로의 열림’을 지향하는 작가의 삶과 시간에 대한 성찰도 “깊은 슬픔, 지극한 그리움, 간절함” 등을 표상하는 ‘돌’과 ‘바람’의 이미지 등으로 형상화되고 있음을 고찰할 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper revolves around Oh, Jung-Hee’s novella ｢Paro Lake｣; it seeks to understand the inner world of characters and the thematic aspects in the story that deal with psychological conflict; it also looks into the symbolism of the imagery that is revealed in the story. Also, this paper seeks to trace the writer’s perception of life and awareness of social reality.
In this work, the author uses ‘Paro Lake’ as a spatial setting, which shows the character's consciousness of discomfort, desire of escaping, and the distorted sense of falsehood. By using the entering of the empty ‘Paro Lake’, images of white stone engraved with a woman's face and the appearance of an old man and the image of cotton seeds and so on, vividly depicts the inner world of the character who wants to go to a self-reliance life, and also shows the dynamic image of ‘Paro Lake’.
It also shows the violence of the Korean War and the tragedy of division, which was happened in ‘Paro Lake’. As a malpractice of modern social development, the scars of flooded areas and the vicious behaviors of the Fifth Republic did in Gwangju were visualized through the images of ‘fog’ and ‘wind’. This can be seen as the author's realistic criticism of the crazy political situation of the Fifth Republic. As a result, the writer's understanding of social reality which was showed in the ｢Fireworks｣, expanded from ｢Stepping on the Shadow｣ to ｢Paro Lake｣.
On the other hand, Oh, Jung-Hee's constant pursuit of self-existence in his works is also constantly showed in this work, which expressed by the desire of the character’s ‘novel writing’. And with the image of ‘Paro Lake’ as the center, it shows the continuity of time and space from prehistoric times to the present. The life which points to ‘Invisible Real Identity’ and ‘Forever Opening’ of the writer and the inspection of time were emerged by using the images of ‘stone’ and ‘wind’ which express deep sadness, extreme longing and eagerness.
