믿을 수 없는 서술의 수사학과 독서의 역동적 과정
초록
‘믿을 수 없는 서술’은 최근 들어 다시 주목받고 있는 개념으로, 기존의 수사학적･윤리적 접근과 독자 중심의 인지론적 접근을 종합하면서 새롭게 재개념화되고 있다. 하지만 국내의 관련 논의들은 수사학적 관점의 소설 미학 연구와 인지론적 관점의 독서 교육 연구로 양분돼 있어, 이 같은 이론적 성과를 충분히 반영하지 못하고 있는 상황이다. 수사학적 관점의 연구들은 윤리적 차원이 배제된 ‘미적 수사학’의 제한된 영역에 머물러 있으며, 인지론적 관점의 연구들은 ‘믿을 수 없음’의 규준을 실제 독자 개개인의 가치관에 맡김으로써 해석의 타당성에 문제가 발생하는 한계를 드러낸다. 이에 이 글에서는 믿을 수 없는 서술의 수사학이 지닌 다층적 효과와 독자가 경험하는 윤리적 참여로서의 독서 과정을 연계하여 살필 것이다. 이로써 다양한 실제 독자가 어떻게 신빙성 판단의 타당성을 확보하면서도 능동적인 의미 산출에 기여할 수 있는지를 검토하고자 한다. 본론에서는 정이현의 ｢순수｣와 임현의 ｢고두｣를 통해, 서술의 신빙성을 판단하고 의미화하는 독서의 과정을 구체적으로 분석할 것이다. ｢순수｣에서는 저자적 행위 주체(내포저자)가 배치한 텍스트의 신호들에 근거해 서술의 비신빙성을 추론하는 ‘저자의 청중’으로서의 독자의 역할과, 이 같은 신빙성 판단을 토대로 저마다의 신념과 가치를 지닌 실제 독자가 의미 생성에 참여하는 과정을 살핀다. 이어서 ｢고두｣에서는 ‘너’라는 수화자의 존재로 전경화된 믿을 수 없는 서술의 수사학이 독자에게 윤리적 입장 설정을 촉구하는 양상과, 이에 대해 실제 독자가 보일 수 있는 각기 다른 반응들을 검토한다. 이를 통해 신빙성 없는 서술자의 관점과 텍스트 전반(또는 내포저자)의 관점 사이의 간극을 매개로, 개별 독자의 가치관이 적극적으로 투영된 의미를 생성하는 독서 과정의 의의를 확인할 것이다. 이는 수사학적･윤리적 접근과 인지론적 접근을 종합하여 믿을 수 없는 서술을 더 심도 있게 논의하기 위한 모색의 성격을 띤다.
Abstract
“Unreliable narration” is a concept that has been gaining attention again recently. Unreliable narration is being reconceptualized, combining rhetorical/ethical approaches and reader-centered cognitive approaches. However, domestic discussions do not fully reflect this achievement. The studies from a rhetorical point of view remain in the limited realm of “aesthetic rhetorics” with no ethical dimension. On the other hand, studies from a cognitive perspective also raise the question for the validity of interpretation by leaving the norm of “unreliability” to the value of each reader. In this essay, we will explore the unreliable narration's rhetoric and the reader's reading process together. In doing so, we would like to examine how flesh and blood readers can ensure the validity of judgement on reliability while contributing to the active formation of meaning. In the main chapters, we will analyze unreliable narration in Jeong, Yi-hyeon's Purity and Lim, Hyeon's Go-doo. In Purity, we will examine the role of “authorial audience” to infer the unreliability of narration and the process by which real readers with their own beliefs and values participate in the creation of meanings. In Go-doo, we will take a look the rhetoric of unreliable narration which urges readers to set up ethical positions, and different reactions that the real readers may show. It will confirm the significance of unreliable narration as a reading experience for each of real reader. This work would be to combine rhetorical/ethical and cognitive approaches to further discuss the unreliable narration.
