조선의 불균등 발전과 식민지 모더니즘 : 이태준의 단편소설을 중심으로, 1930-1937

이태준의 단편소설들은 일본의 식민지 정책 때문에 몰락하여 고향을 떠나는 조선 농민들, 1930년대 경성 시내와 변두리 지역에 거주하는 가난한 조선인들을 주로 묘사하였다. 이태준 단편소설에 관한 기존의 연구는, ‘일본은 근대 그리고 조선은 전근대적인 것’이라는 관점에서 그의 소설이 근대화로 사라져가는 조선적인 것에 향수를 보인다고 주장했다. 반면에 이 논문은 이태준이 묘사한 조선인의 모습은 식민지 근대화 때문에 새롭게 생겨난 것이라고 보았다. 이태준은 일본 제국과 식민지 조선의 국제 분업에 의한 조선의 불균등 발전과 그로 인해 생긴 새로운 유형의 조선인과 그 삶을 묘사하였다. 제국은 하층 조선인들을 특별히 보호하지 않아도 사라지지 않는 존재인 잉여 노동력으로 보았다. 이에 반해, 이태준은 자신의 소설에서 이들을 아름답고 섬세한 조선어로 묘사함으로써 가치가 있는 것으로 만들었다. 한마디로, 이태준의 단편소설은 하층 조선인을 묘사함으로써 식민 통치자에는 아무런 가치가 없었던 그들에게 예술적인 가치를 부여하였으며, 이런 방식으로 ‘식민지 모더니즘’의 한 유형을 창조하였다.
Abstract
Yi Tae-jun’s short stories depicted mainly the peasants who left their farm villages due to Japanese policies toward colonial Koreans, and the poor in Gyeongseong and its suburbs. Previous studies on Yi’s short stories, regarding ‘Japan as modern while Korea as pre-modern,’ asserted that Yi expressed nostalgia for intrinsic Korean things which disappeared with modernization. On the contrary, this study, regarding the miserable life of Korean lower-class depicted in Yi Tae-jun's short stories as the phenomena of daily life created by colonial modernization, argues that Yi illustrated a new type of life and people that resulted from the uneven development of Korea based on the division of roles between imperial Japan and colonial Korea. Japanese imperialism viewed lower colonial Koreans as redundant labours, which were imperishable under the no protection. In contrast, Yi made them invaluable in his literature by describing their life using beautiful and delicate Korean language, and created a type of colonial modernism in this manner.
