재현과 논설 : 염상섭 소설의 사실주의적 서술방식의 형성과정

염상섭은 초기 삼부작에서 작중 자아의 주관적 심경을 고찰하는 방식으로 고백체를 실천했다. 그러나 ｢만세전｣을 계기로 그의 소설적 관심은 객관 쪽으로 선회하였다. 선행 연구에서는 초기 삼부작과 ｢만세전｣ 사이에 나타난 변화를 단절이나 단층으로 규정하였다. 본 논문은 그 지점에 주목하여 ｢만세전｣과 초기 삼부작을 연결하는 계기들을 설명하였다.

초기 삼부작 이후 형성된 염상섭의 사실주의적 서술은 사실과 의미에 걸쳐 객관성을 추구하였다. 사실은 충실하게 재현되었고 의미는 논리적으로 전개되었다. 사실과 의미 중에서는 전자가 중시되었다. 그 어떤 신념이나 가치도 사실보다 우선하지 못한다는 것이 염상섭이 사실주의자로서 견지한 태도였다. 그로서는 모종의 의미를 위해 사실을 조종하거나 변형하는 작용은 용납되지 않았다. 논설적인 서술로 형성된 의미가 그 자체로 보편성을 지니더라도 대개의 경우 작중 현실에서 상대화되었다. 보편적인 이념이나 윤리의 실현이 불가능할 만큼 객관 현실은 비정하고 냉혹했다.

본질적인 가치를 유보할 만큼 염상섭은 사실 앞에서 겸허하려 했다. 다면적이고 다층적인 현실을 충실히 재현하고자 한 탓에 그는 정치적으로 특정 입장을 고수할 수 없었다. 그것이 그의 정치적 입장이 선명하게 규정되지 못하도록 하는 이유이기도 하다.

In his ‘early trilogy’, Yeom sang-sup practiced confession style by expressing the subjective feelings of the textual self. However, his novel attention has shifted towards objectivity since Manseijeon. In the preceding study, the changes between the early trilogy and Manseijeon were defined as either a break or a fault. This paper noted the point and discussed that the change realized the potentialities that were implicit in his early trilogy.

Yeom Sang-sup’s realistic writing style which was made after his early trilogy sought objectivity across facts and meanings. Facts were faithfully reproduced and meaning was logically developed. Between fact and meaning, the former was valued. It was his tenacious attitude as a realist that no faith or value takes precedence over facts. Manipulation or transformation of facts for some purpose was not acceptable to him. Although the meaning formed by a narrative description was universal in itself, in most cases, it was relativized in the reality of text. In his view, the objective reality was cold-hearted and harsh, to the extent that it was impossible to realize universal value or ethics.

Yeom Sang-seop tried to humble himself before the fact enough to retain the essential value. He was unable to stick to a particular position politically because he wanted to faithfully reproduce the multifaceted and multi-layered reality. That is why his political position is not clearly defined.
