장용학 후기소설 「夫餘에 죽다」에 나타난 탈식민주의 연구

본 논문은 장용학의 후기소설 「夫餘에 죽다」에 나타난 탈식민주의적 특성을 살펴본 것이다.

장용학은 식민지가 국가의 산물임을 자각했다. 그는 일본의 천황제와 마찬가지로 당대의 박정희 군사정권 역시 국민을 지배하기 위해 역사를 조작한다는 것을 간파했다. 그래서 그는 당대의 문학운동이 ‘대안근대’를 추구했던 것과 달리, 국가에서 벗어나기 위해 소설을 통해 ‘비국민되기’를 실험했다.

이 작품에서 장용학은 일본제국주의자와 식민지 조선인의 후손을 각각 등장시킨다. 주인공 ‘하다나까’는 일본인이기를 거부하고 백제인이 되고자한다. 그는 전라도에 갔다가 아버지에게 죽임을 당한 조선인의 손녀인 ‘미스 柳’를 만나 사랑에 빠진다. 그러나 그들의 사랑은 ‘미스 柳’의 죽음으로 이루어지지 못한다. 다른 한편 하다나까와 ‘반체제분자’인 ‘나’는 우연히 경주에서 만났다가 친구가 된다. 세 명의 인물들이 서로 사랑하고 친구가 된것은 모두 근대 주체에서 벗어나 새로운 신체로 생성되었기 때문에 가능했다.

장용학은 소설을 통해 신체들이 민족(국민)주체에서 벗어날 때 진정한 탈식민적 삶이 가능하다는 것을 보여준다.

This paper examines a post-national desire in Jang Yong Hak’s later novel, Dying in Buyeo. Jang Yong Hak acknowledged that colony was the product of nation. He realized that, just as Japanese emperor system did, Park Chung Hee military regime also distorted history to rule people. That is why he experimented “becoming non-nationals” through his novel. While his contemporary writers aimed at “alternative modern,” Jang tried to escape from nation.

In Dying in Buyeo, Jang presents the descendants of Japanese imperialists and Koreans as major characters. Hadanaka, the protagonist of this novel, refuses to be Japanese; rather, he wants to belong to Baek-je. He visits Jeonlado and falls in love with Miss Yu, whose father was beaten and killed by Hadanaka’s father. Their tragic love, however, cannot continue because of Miss Yu’s death. On the other hand, Hadanaka and I, a dissident, become friends when encountering in Geyongju. These uncommon relationships among the three characters could be realized since they ‘become new bodies’ beyond modern subjects. Jang Yong Hak demonstrates that a genuine post-national life could be feasible when a body liberates itself from a national subject.
