못 들은 척과 침묵 : 김유정 문학에서 듣기의 양상과 그 의미

이 연구는 김유정의 전기적인 행적에 착안하여, 김유정 문학을 듣기의 시각에서 다시 읽은 결과물이다. 김유정은 인물 간의 대화를 작품에서 많이 활용했다. 그의 작품에서 듣기는 인물의 성격이나 됨됨이를 제시하고, 사건 전개의 계기로 작용한다. 또한 비극적 결말의 원인으로 기능하거나 인물의 주체화 과정의 토대로 작용한다. 이 연구는 김유정 문학에서 인물들이 상대의 말을 정확히 듣기보다는 듣고 싶은 말만 들으려 하며, 이러한 듣기가 자신들이 처한 문제를 해결하지 못하는 원인이 된다는 점을 밝혔다. 이어 김유정이 듣기에서 정보의 전달보다는 듣기 주체의 태도를 중요하게 보았음을 살펴보았다. 특히 ｢두포전｣과 ｢산골｣이 듣지 않으려는 인간의 비극적 최후와 들으려는 인간의 주체화 과정을 대조하고 있다는 것을 논증했다.

이 연구는 김유정 문학에 나타난 침묵을 권력의 비판과 들음의 윤리라는 두 가지 양상으로 읽었다. 김유정은 ｢정조｣에서 가부장 인물의 못 들은 척과 침묵을 통해 무능한 권력을 조롱했고, ｢만무방｣에서 지주의 침묵을 통해 1930년대 자본주의 식민 농정의 폭력을 폭로했다. 이 연구는 ｢만무방｣에 나타난 폭력이 말하지 못하도록 만들기, 말하면 그에 침묵함으로써 그 말을 무력화하기의 양상으로 나타남을 살펴보았다. ｢생의 반려｣에서 침묵이 들리는 말을 듣기가 아니라 말의 자리를 마련하는 듣기임을, ｢형｣에서 침묵이 억압적 권력에 대한 저항이자 그 권력을 향한 처벌임을 논증했다. 이러한 과정을 통해 김유정 문학을 듣기의 가능성에 대한 문학적실험이라고 평가했다.

This study is the result of reviewing Kim Yoo-jung's literature from the perspective of listening, focusing on Kim Yoo-jung's biography. Kim Yoo-jung used a lot of dialogue between characters in his works. In his works, listening presents the personality of a character, shows who he or she is or operates as an cause for development of events. It also functions as a cause of a tragic ending or as a basis for a subjectivation process of character. This study revealed that the characters in Kim Yoo-jung's literature try to listen only to what they want to hear rather than what others want to speak accurately, and this is the reason why they cannot solve their problems. It examined that Kim Yoo-jung considered the attitude of listener more important than information delivery. In particular, it demonstrated that in ｢Dupojeon｣ and ｢Sangol｣ , there is striking contrast between the tragic end of humans who do not try to listen and the subjectivation process of humans who try to listen.

This study examined silence in Kim Yoo-jung's literature in two aspects - criticism of power and ethics of listening. In ｢Jungjo｣, Kim Yoo-jung mocked incompetent power through patriarch person pretending not to hear and keeping silent and in ｢Manmubang｣, exposed the violence of capitalism colonial agricultural administration in the 1930s through the landlord's silence. This study examined that the violence appears in the aspect of making it impossible to speak and otherwise neutralizing the words by keeping silent. In ｢Partner in the Life｣, it revealed that silence is not listening to words that can be heard, but listening that creates a space for words. In ｢Brother｣, it showed that silence can be a resistance to oppressive power and a punishment for that power. Through this process, Kim Yoo-jung's literature was evaluated as a literary experiment on the possibility of listening.
