폭음하는 신체의 침묵과 해방 : 『만세전』 다시 읽기
초록
이 글은 이인화가 체현하고 있는 식민지 주체의 신체적 수행성의 한 양상으로서 술 마시는 인간(homo imbibens)의 양태에 주목하여 『만세전』을 다시 읽는 시도이다.
동경 유학생 인화는 자신을 향한 부조리한 조사와 통제를 ‘견딜만하다’라고 합리화하면서 그에 따른 부정적인 정동을 일시적인 소비와 음주를 동반한 향락으로 해소해 왔다. 이러한 그의 행태는 조선인 정체성을 경원시하는 주체의 자기 배려와 관련되는데, 이후 그의 심신은 열등감과 자기 학대에 시달리게 된다. 인화의 조선인 정체성은 귀국 이후 성인 남성으로서 피할 수 없는 술자리에 참여하게 되면서 강도를 더해간다. 이러한 상황 속에서 그는 피동적인 삶 속에서 자유의지를 상실한 폭음하는 신체가 되었다고 자조하게 된다.
소설의 말미에 이르러 폭음하는 조선인-신체 인화는 종전과 혁명 이후라는 신시대에 발맞춰 그간의 관성적이면서 수동적인 자기 배려의 삶에서 해방되길 꿈꾼다. 그 첫걸음은 동경에서 정자와 맺은 술집에서의 피상적인 인간관계를 우정과 호혜적 증여 관계로 전환하는 것이었다. 여기에는 세계의 변혁을 위해 그간의 침묵을 그치고 무람없이 타인에게 말을 걸어 그들의 침묵 또한 깨뜨리고자 하는 당시 청년 염상섭의 해방에 대한 지론이 담겨 있다.
Abstract
This article is an attempt to re-interpret Mansejeon by paying attention to the homo imbibens as an aspect of the colonial subject's bodily performativity embodied in Lee In-hwa.
As a Chosun student in Tokyo, he has rationalized the irrational investigation and control directed at him as ‘tolerable’ and resolved the negative emotions with temporary consumption and pleasure accompanied by drinking. His behavior is related to the self-care of the subject who neglects the identity of Chosun. It makes his mind and body suffer from inferiority and self-abuse. To make matters worse, as In-hwa participates in inevitable drinking parties after returning home, he is obsessed with the feeling that his Korean identity is gradually strengthening. In such a situation, he is frustrated by his ego of himself degenerating into a binge-drinking body that has lost his active life and free will.
At the end of the plot, In-hwa has a desire to be freed from the inertial and passive self-care of the past to keep pace with the new era of the post-First World War and the post-revolutionary period; the first step is to convert the superficial human relationship with Jeongja, a tavern employee in Tokyo, into friendship and reciprocal gift relationship. This contains thought on liberation of Yeom Sang-sup, a young man at the time, who tried to break their silence and talk to each others without hesitation in order to change the world.
