박완서 소설의 죽음정치적 특성과 그 의미 : 『아주 오래된 농담』을 중심으로

이 글의 목적은 박완서의 후기작 『아주 오래된 농담』(2000)을 통해 죽음의 할당과 관리가 개인 및 공동체의 삶을 지배하는 양상을 살피고, 그것을 전쟁을 겪은 한국(인)의 경험적 산물로 파악하고 탐구하는 것이다. 특히 박완서가 여성 작가로서 소설을 통해 천착해온 젠더이데올로기의 문제는 이러한 죽음-삶의 신체적 동기화와 주체 구성 간의 관련성을 포착할 수 있게 해준다는 점에서 의미를 지닌다. 이러한 접근을 토대로 박완서 소설에 나타나는 죽음정치적 특성을 살피고, 그의 소설을 한국문학에서 주체화 및 신체 사유의 내러티브를 확장하는 것으로서 제고하고자 한다.

『아주 오래된 농담』에서 죽음정치는 산 자의 몸이 ‘시체’가 되는 것을 추동함으로써 그 밖의 것을 죽음으로부터 오염되지 않게 하기 위한 일종의 제의이자 향연이다. 송회장 일가가 보이는 죽음정치는 죽음의 할당과 관리가 삶을 구조화하는 자본주의적 통치술에 대한 것이자, ‘욕된 죽음’을 규정하고 그것을 남은 자들이 ‘삼키는’ 제의를 통해 죽음-삶 연속체로서 살아가는 한국(인)적인 삶의 역사적 맥락에 접근한다. 한편 소설에서 여성 인물들을 수태와 낙태의 몸으로 관계적으로 (재)배치하는 것은 자본주의적 가부장제하 죽음을 주체화의 문제로 다루고 심화하는 것이다. 『아주 오래된 농담』은 ‘시체’가 ‘자본’이 되는 메커니즘의 기원인 한국전쟁이라는 작가 원체험을 되짚고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 자본주의의 첨단을 가시화하는 존재로서의 여성, 가족의 역사적 삶을 다시금 밝히려는 소설이다.

This paper sets a viewpoint of Necro-politics in order to re-read her later work A Very Old Joke. It can be said that her novels use death to deal with the aspect of the physical synchronization with life and death and the political dynamics that continuously reconstructs the two states.

Park's novels and writings resulted from an endless impulse to interpret the slaughter she experienced as a non-national during the Korean War and the shameful death of her close relatives. Passing through the Cold War order that constantly produced ‘dishonorable death’ and the industrial era with the twined order, Park's novels cultivate a worldview that describes the body, in which death is embodied, as a gender-differentiated spatial experience.

This paper aims to examine such aspects in the context of her ‘novel history,’ and by doing so, argue that her novels tear down the strictly partitioned boundary between life and death and show a form of subjectivity that is reconstructed into an affective system of death.
