이산가족 소설에 나타난 한국사회의 욕망과 위선 : 박완서, 『그해 겨울은 따뜻했네』를 중심으로
초록
이 글은 박완서(1931~2011) 작가의 장편소설 『그해 겨울은 따뜻했네』(1983)가 이산가족 상봉 국면에서 감추어진 한국 사회의 욕망과 위선을 드러냈다는데 착안하였다. 이산가족의 재회를 막는 것은 ‘잘 살아보세’라는 구호아래 과거를 잊고 전진하는 속물적 태도였다. 본고는 동생 오목이를 찾고도 모르는 척하는 수지와 수철 남매에게서 이러한 속물성이 드러나고 있음에 주목하고 특히 이 속물성이 최소한의 위선이나 죄책감도 없는 뻔뻔스러움의 경지로 나아가고 있다고 보았다. 한편 1960년대 중반 고아원을 나온 오목이가 겪는 시련은 고아가 된 이산가족이 한국사회에서 뿌리내리는 것이 사실상 불가능하다는 것을 보여준다. 평생 고아를 벗어나고 싶어 했던 오목이가 남편이 어렵사리 중동 일자리를 얻어 떠난 후에 죽고 또 다시 아이들만 남는 장면은 고아의 가족 만들기의 어려움을 상징한다. 이산가족 세 남매의 이야기를 통해 드러난 속물적 욕망은 이산가족 상봉을 가로막는 현실적인 어려움을 보여주는데 이는 여타의 이산가족 서사에서는 볼 수 없었던 것이라는 점에서 의미가 있다.
Abstract
The article analyzes Park Wan-seo (1931-2011)’s novel, The Winter was Warm in that Year(1983), revealing the desire and hypocrisy of Korean society hidden in the practice of cross-border family reunions. It was snobbish attitudes that prevented family reunions, coercing people to forget the past and move forward under superficial slogans like “Let’s live well” (“Jal sal a bose”). This article reveals the snobbery and brazenness of the characters, Susie and her brother, in their facade in failing to find their missing sister, Omok in the novel. Meanwhile, Omok’s struggling in the novel evidences the challenges for orphans to start new families in the mid-1960s in Korea. Omok’s husband left her for a job in the Middle East and she eventually died alone leaving her children orphans despite her struggle to break away from the confines of being an orphan. This novel reveals the obstacle that society’s obsession with wealth poses on family reunion, a point of view that has yet been overlooked in other stories about divided families.
