박완서 소설에서 나타나는 ‘중(中)’의 의미 연구 : 공간 형상화를 중심으로

이 글은 박완서의 『그 많던 싱아는 누가 다 먹었을까』에서 드러나는 공간의 형상화를 중심으로, 박완서의 텍스트에서 반복적으로 언급되는 ‘중산층’의 성격을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 『싱아』는 자전적 소설이지만 동시에 ‘1930~50년대의 풍속을 그리고 싶었다’는 작가의 의도가 분명히 드러나는 작품이다. 본고는 이러한 작가의 의도를 바탕으로 ‘박적골’과 ‘현저동’을 시대적 상황과 함께 살펴봄으로써 두 공간 체험이 작가의 ‘중’에 대한 의미화에 어떤 영향을 주었는지를 파악하고자 하였다. 대립적 공간 서술을 바탕으로 본고는 ‘중’의 의미를 ‘수평적 중’(중심)과 ‘수직적 중’(중간)으로 구분하였고, 박적골은 평등하고 이상적인 공간으로, 현저동은 소외와 차별의 공간으로 형상화됨을 확인할 수 있었다. 두 공간 체험은 ‘나’의 ‘경제감(sense of economic)’ 형성에 영향을 주며, 이후 한국전쟁의 체험과 더불어 ‘중’에 대한 이중의식을 형성하게 한다. 따라서 수평적 경제 공동체로 형상화되는 박적골은 그릇된 자본주의에 대한 작가의 대안적 시각이 반영된 것으로 볼 수 있다.

This article is aimed at analyzing the nature of the ‘middle class’ repeatedly mentioned in Park Wan-seo's Texts, with the focus of spatial representation shown in Who ate all That many Sing-A?. Sing-A is autobiographical novel, and also reveals the author's intention to ‘contain the customs of the 1930s and 1950s.’ This paper assumes that the two space experiences of “Park Jeok-gol” and “Hyeonjeo-dong” may have influenced the author’s consciousness about “middle(中)”. Based on the narrative of confrontational space, the main text divided the meaning of “middle” into “horizontal(middle)” and “vertical(middle)”. it was confirmed that ‘Park Jeok-gol’ was shaped into a space of equality and ideal “middle(中)”, while ‘Hyeonjeo-dong’ was shaped into a space of alienation and discrimination. As such, ‘Park Jeok-gol’ and ‘Hyeonjeo-dong’ the two spatial experiences affect the formation of My ‘sense of economy’. And later, it creates a dual consciousness of “middle(中)” with the experience of the Korean War. Thus, the “Park Jeok-gol” shaped as a “horizontal economic community”, reflects the author's alternative point of views of wrong capitalism.
