김원일의 『바람과 강』에 드러난 정념 기억과 주체 의식 연구
초록
이 글의 목적은 김원일의 『바람과 강』에 나타난 정념 기억과 주체의식의 변화를 연구하는 데 있다. 『바람과 강』은 일제강점기 시절 독립군으로 활동하다 ‘변절자’가 된 사건의 기억을 중심으로 한 작품으로 우리 소설사에서 자기 징벌의 문제를 가장 깊게 다룬 장편으로 평가받는다. 여기서는 그러한 징벌의 방식과 의미에 대해 논구하고자 한 개인의 과거에서 기억과 정념(passion)이 하나의 불가분한 복합체로 작용된다는 점을 전제했다. 특히 자전적 기억의 서술에서 정념은 기억의 신빙성을 검증할 수 있는 기준이 될 수 있다. 본고에서는 정념을 동반하면서 동시에 촉발하는 기억을 정념 기억이라 칭하고 주인공 이인태가 기이한 양극적 행위를 보이는 것을 정념 기억에 붙들려 있기 때문인 것으로 보았다. 그가 가진 정념의 근원은 독립군 시절 자신이 의도하지 않았던 변절의 행위로 인해 여러 조선인이 죽으면서 생성된 것으로 그 안에는 두려움과 고통의 정념을 비롯해 죄의식과 자기혐오, 자기 구원의 욕망 등을 포함한다. 본문에서는 먼저 자기혐오의 정념이 주문(呪文)에 복속(服屬)되는 과정을 거쳐 드러나는 것으로 보고 복속의 상태에서 벗어나 스스로를 구원해보려는 욕망에서 종교적 귀의(歸依)나 묘터 찾기의 행위가 이루어지는 것에 대해 논의한다. 마지막으로 판소리를 계기로 자기 고해를 이루면서 동시에 무의식 속에 잠재되어 있던 인간적 연민(compassion)을 회복하는 것으로 자기 정화에 이르는 과정을 논의한다. 이로써 작가가 『바람과 강』을 통해 보이고자 했던, 반성과 실천의 분투를 행하는 변절자의 삶과 그 문학적 말로의 의미에 다가갈 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to study passion memory and the change of subject consciousness revealed in “Wind and River” written by Kim, Won-Il. In an individual’s past, memory and passion is a complex, which is indivisible, especially the passion described from autobiographical memories can be criteria to verify credibility of memories. In this paper, the memory accompanied with passion is called passion memory. Why the main character, Lee, In-Tae exhibited bizarre behavior was that he was overpowered by passion memory. The source of his passion was created by the death of many Koreans caused by his act of betrayal when he was an army for national independence. It included fear, pain, guilt, self-loathing, desire of self-salvation. His passion of self-loathing was generated by completely obeying the words from Chosun people like spells. And in order to save himself from being subordinated, he studied religious doctrine and looked for resting places. Finally, it showed the process of self-purification by recovering the human compassion in the unconsciousness and making self-confession with Pansori. We hereby understand what the author intended to show in “Wind and River”: the life of a betrayer who did a self-examination and passed from thought to action and the meaning of the literary outcome.
