강단과 현장, 연구와 비평 : <올해의 문제소설>을 중심으로

한국현대소설학회는 1992년 11월 창립되어 1993년 12월 학술지 ≪현대소설연구≫를 발간하기 시작했고 이듬해 2월 『우리 시대의 문제소설』이라는 앤솔로지를 간행한 바 있다. 이 시리즈는 『올해의 문제소설』이라는 이름을 달고 매년 문예지에 발표된 한국소설 중·단편 작품들을 검토하여 추천, 소개할 만한 작품을 선정하는 방식으로 현재까지도 발간되고 있다. 현대문학 분과 내에서 학술 단체의 이러한 행보는 유사한 경우를 찾기 어려울뿐더러 문학사적 관점에서도 매우 흥미로운 사례이다. 본고는 『올해의 문제소설』 선집의 발간 경위와 그 흐름, 그리고 현황을 구체적으로 확인하면서 이 기획이 지니고 있는 한국 현대문학 연구/비평 내의 미묘하고도 오래된 갈등을 들여다보고자 한다. 흔히 ‘강단 비평’이라는 용어로 일컬어져 왔던 대학 소속 연구자 중심의 문학적 담론 형성은 한국 현대문학이 분과 학문으로 정립되던 20세기 중반부터 논쟁적인 지점이었다. 그것은 당대 문학 현장에서 생산되는 작품, 작가를 어떤 형태로든 다루지 않을 수 없는 현대문학 분과의 학문적 특성에 기인하는 것이기도 했다. 『올해의 문제소설』은 지속성을 가진 학술단체와 대학이라는 제도적 기반 아래에서 여타의 문학 앤솔로지와는 비교할 수 없는 안정성과 견고함을 갖고 자유로운 문학적 선택을 지속해왔다. 그 결과 문학 연구가 의식할 수밖에 없는 문학적 계보에 대한 강박 혹은 정전의 형성이라는 관점을 벗어나 의미 있는 기획을 장기간 이어올 수 있었다. 본고는 『올해의 문제소설』이 갖는 의의를 구체적으로 분석하면서 향후 발전적으로 이 작업이 지속성을 갖고 이어 지기를 기대하고자 한다.
Abstract
THE SOCIETY OF KOREAN FICTION was founded in November 1992 and began publishing its journal, The Journal of Korean Fiction Research in December 1993, followed in February of the next year by the anthology Our Era’s Problematic Novel. Under the title The Problematic Novel of the Year, this series has since continued to be published every year by reviewing Korean short stories that appeared in literary magazines and selecting works deemed worthy of recommendation and introduction. Such a project undertaken by an academic association within the field of contemporary literature is not only difficult to find parallels for, but also constitutes a highly intriguing case from the perspective of literary history. This article aims to examine in detail the publication background, development, and current status of the anthology The Problematic Novel of the Year, and through this to explore the subtle yet longstanding tensions embedded in research and criticism on modern Korean literature. The formation of literary discourse led by university-affiliated researchers, commonly referred to as “academic criticism,” has been a point of controversy since the mid-twentieth century, when modern Korean literature was being established as a distinct academic discipline. This is partly attributable to the disciplinary nature of modern literature, which cannot avoid dealing in some form with the works and writers produced in the contemporary literary field. Grounded in the institutional support of a stable academic association and the university system, The Problematic Novel of the Year has been able to maintain a level of stability and solidity unmatched by other literary anthologies, while continually exercising a relatively free literary selection. As a result, it has managed to carry on a meaningful long-term project that escapes the compulsion toward literary genealogy or the formation of a fixed canon that literary scholarship cannot help but be conscious of. By offering a concrete analysis of the significance of The Problematic Novel of the Year, this article ultimately seeks to suggest ways in which this endeavor might continue to develop and sustain itself in the future.
