웹소설 장르 형성 및 정착 과정과 플랫폼 내 유료 결제 도입의 관계 연구 : <문피아>의 유료화 도입을 중심으로
초록
이 글은 웹소설 장르의 형성과 정착이 웹소설 플랫폼의 정책 및 형식 변화와 관련되어 있다는 가설을 가지고, 그중에서도 특히 ‘유료 결제 도입’에 대해 집중하여 다룬다. 웹소설은 2013년을 전후로 장르가 분화되고 이전의 장르로부터 완전한 독립을 이루기 시작하였다. 2013년은 ‘웹소설’이라는 명칭이 도입된 시기인데, 장르의 정립에는 명칭도 필요하지만, 근본적으로 장르에 대한 인식과 장르가 작동하고 규범이 만들어지고 실천될 수 있는 매체 환경과 그로 인한 계기가 필요하다. 당시 소설 연재 플랫폼들의 ‘유료결제 도입’은 바로 그 환경과 계기 중 중요한 사례에 해당하는 것으로서, 웹소설이 종이책/도서 대여점이라는 전통의 매체로부터 완전히 독립되어 별개의 장르로 자리 잡는 근거가 되었다. <문피아>는 무료연재 플랫폼이면서 커뮤니티의 성격이 강했기 때문에, 유료 결제 도입 당시 사용자들의 저항이 상당했고, 게시판을 통해 이에 대한 다양한 의견이 개진되었다. 유료화된 작품의 규격 및 수준 논의에서부터 내용 및 형식 논의에 닿아 있는 해당 논의들은, 현재 웹소설의 장르적 특성과 규범이라고 할 수 있는 여러 조건들이 도출되는 데 기여했다. 웹소설이라는 장르가 분화되는 과정에서 플랫폼 사용자들이 수평적, 다중적 의견 개진을 통해 적극적인 비평 주체의 역할을 했음을 보여주는 중요한 사례에 해당한다고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
This article hypothesizes that the formation and establishment of the web novel genre are related to policy and structural changes in web novel platforms, with particular focus on the introduction of online payment systems. The web novel genre began to differentiate around 2013, marking its complete independence from previous genres. That year also saw the introduction of the term 'Web novel.' While naming the genre was important for its establishment, what was truly essential was creating a media environment where the genre could be recognized, developed, and implemented—an opportunity that needed to be seized.
The introduction of online payment systems by web novel platforms at that time served as a significant example of such an environment and tool. It laid the foundation for web novels to evolve into a distinct genre, fully independent of traditional media such as printed books and rental bookstores.
In particular, "Munpia," as a free serial platform with a strong community character, encountered considerable resistance from users when paid services were introduced. Diverse opinions were expressed through bulletin boards, ranging from discussions about the specifications and quality of paid works to debates about content and format. These discussions contributed to the formation of various conditions that can be considered the genre's characteristics and conventions today.
This case demonstrates that platform users played an active role as critics, providing horizontal and multiple perspectives during the process of genre differentiation for web novels.
