한강의 『희랍어 시간』 속 분리와 연결의 역학

이 논문은 한강의 『희랍어 시간』 속 ‘타자/세계’와의 분리와 연결의 역학을 분석하는 것을 목표로 한다. 『희랍어 시간』에서 폭력과 고통은 세계와의 단절과 자기소외로 이어지고, 그러한 소외의 경험은 새로운 관계 맺음의 계기로 작용한다. 본 연구는 플라톤의 ‘동굴의 비유’, 보르헤스의 ｢울리카｣, 소포클레스의 ｢콜로노스의 오이디푸스｣를 참고하여, 텍스트 속 남녀 주인공이 어떻게 언어와 감각을 통해 세계를 인식하고, 분리와 연결을 경험하는지를 탐구한다. 이를 위해 첫째, ‘언어/빛’이 어떻게 주체와 세계 사이의 분리를 초래하는지, 둘째, 남성 화자의 실명(失明)과 여성 화자의 실어(失語)가 세계와의 관계에서 어떤 의미를 가지는지, 셋째, 시선의 교차와 초점의 역전을 통해 관계 맺음의 가능성을 어떻게 모색하는지를 분석했다. 이를 통해 본고는 『희랍어 시간』이 언어의 폭력성과 관계 맺음의 불안정성을 형상화하면서, 영원히 어긋날 수밖에 없는 관계 맺음에 자신을 다시 내맡기는 인간 존재의 용기를 형상화하고 있음을 밝히고자 했다.

This paper examines the dynamics of disconnection and relationality in Han Kang’s Greek Lessons. In this novel, violence and pain lead not only to rupture from the world and self-alienation but also to the possibility of forming new modes of connection. Referencing Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave,” Borges’ “Ulrica,” and Sophocles’ “Oedipus at Colonus,” this study explores how the male and female protagonists perceive the world through language and sensory experience, experiencing repeated movements of separation and relational re-engagement. Specifically, the paper analyzes: (1) how “language/light” produces a divide between the subject and the world; (2) how the male protagonist’s blindness and the female protagonist’s aphasia reshape their relationship with the world; and (3) how the crossing of gazes and the reversal of focalization open a precarious, yet meaningful possibility for relationality. Ultimately, Greek Lessons portrays both the violence of language and the fragility of connection, while illuminating the human courage to reach out again toward others—even when relationships are fated to remain forever misaligned.
