주체의 자기비판과 새로운 윤리적 주체로의 전회 : 한강의 ｢나무불꽃｣을 중심으로
초록
본고에서는 한강의 『채식주의자』 연작 중 ｢나무불꽃｣을 중심으로 하여 주체와 타자와 규범의 관계에서, 대안적 특수규범을 지향하는 여성 인물 ‘영혜’와 함께, ‘영혜’를 매개로 하여 자신의 성립조건인 보편규범을 문제 삼고 주체로서의 자신의 정체성에 대해 반성적 성찰을 꾀하면서 점차 타자를 배려하는 윤리적 주체로 질적 전회하는 여성 인물 ‘그녀’의 모습과 그 의의를 살펴본다.
‘그녀’는 남성중심주의와 가족중심주의, 그리고 정신병원 제도로 대표되는 보편규범의 폭력성과 그러한 규범을 성실히 수행하는 주체이다. 반면, 동생 ‘영혜’는 폭력적인 보편규범을 거부하고 ‘나무’로 표상되는 대안적 특수규범을 지향함으로써 정신병원에 감금된 채 화석화되어가는 타자의 모습으로 그려진다. ‘그녀’는 동생 영혜의 호소를 들으며 보편규범을 수행하는 주체로서의 자신을 반성적으로 성찰하고, 타자의 타자성을 인정하면서 ‘나무’로 표상되는 타자의 특수규범과 하나가 되고자 하는 새로운 윤리적 주체로 거듭난다. 그것은 타자의 타자성을 읽어내는 주체에 의해 꿈과 현실, 인간과 나무, 주체와 타자, 정상과 비정상의 경계가 허물어진 자리에서 배태된다.
Abstract
In this paper, focusing on “Flaming Trees” in the series of “Vegetarian” by Han Gang, we looked at the subject gradually turning into an ethical subject that cares for others while taking issue with universal norms, and listening to the appeals of others, who are threatened by universal norms in the relationship between subjects, others, and norms.
She is a subject who faithfully carries out the violence of universal norms represented by masculism, patriarchy, and mental hospital systems. On the other hand, younger sister ‘Young-hye’ is depicted as a different person being fossilized as ‘homo-sacer’ while being confined to a mental hospital by rejecting universal norms and aiming for an alternative special norm. Listening to the appeal of her younger sister Young-hye, she reflects on herself as a subject who practices universal norms, acknowledges the other’s otherness, and becomes a new ethical subject who wants to become one with the other’s special norms represented by ‘tree’. It is embedded in the place where the boundaries between dreams and reality, humans and trees, subjects and others, and normal and abnormalities are broken by the subject who reads the other’s otherness.
