불가능한 장소에서, 고통의 미메시스와 글쓰기의 드라마 : 한강의 『작별하지 않는다』를 중심으로

한강의 소설 『작별하지 않는다』의 서사는 ‘나’의 고통과 상징적 죽음을 경유해 제주 4·3의 고통 한가운데로 자발적으로 걸어들어가는 고통의 서사다. 이 소설에서 ‘나’의 상징적 죽음은 ‘나’를 탈존시켜 ‘나’ 바깥의 죽어간 타자들의 고통에 열어놓고 자기의 몸과 마음을 그들의 몸과 마음에 겹쳐놓는다. 그러한 고통의 미메시스는 소설 전체에 걸쳐 반복되며, 이를 통해 한강은 소설 속에서 제주 4·3의 고통에 대한 글쓰기의 전제와 방법을 연출한다. 그리고 작가가 이를 경유해 그려놓은 ‘쓰기’의 공간은 죽은 자들의 혼/유령이 도래하고 그들의 목소리가 현전하는 불가능한 장소다. 한강은 제주 4·3에 대한 그 ‘쓰기’의 공간을 ‘나’(의 혼)와 인선(의 혼)의 목소리, 죽은 자들의 혼의 목소리가 겹쳐져 그들 모두가 참여하는 읽기와 말하기, 듣기가 상연되는 공간으로 만든다. 말하기와 듣기가 중심이 된 2~3부의 형식은 글쓰기 주체뿐만 아니라 독자까지도 청자(聽者)로 끌어들여 제주 4·3에 대한 집합적 기억을 공유하고 ‘함께 겪는’ 장으로 만든다. 고통에 대한 ‘쓰기’는 이렇게 ‘함께 겪기’의 차원으로 확장된다. 이것이 어떻게 쓸 것인가, 라는 물음에 대한 한강의 해답이다.
Abstract
Han Kang's novel “We Do not Part” is a narrative of pain in which the narrator voluntarily walks into the midst of the suffering of Jeju 4-3 via the pain and symbolic death of 'I'. The mimesis of pain is repeated throughout in this novel, and through it, Han creates the premise and method of writing about the suffering of Jeju 4-3 in the novel. And the space of 'writing' that she depicts through it is an impossible place where the spirits/ghosts of the dead arrive and their voices become manifest. Han turns the space of 'writing' about Jeju 4-3 into a space where the voices of 'I', Inseon's voice, and the voices of the dead are superimposed, and where reading, speaking, and listening are staged in which all of them participate. The two- or three-part format, centered on speaking and listening, invites not only the writer but also the reader to become a listener, sharing and 'experiencing' the collective memory of Jeju 4-3. The 'writing' of pain is expanded to the dimension of 'experiencing together' in this way.
