조세희의 ‘은강’ 연작과 1970년대 한국의 산업선교 : 『난장이가 쏘아올린 작은 공』, ｢천사의 달｣을 중심으로

이 글은 조세희가 집필에 몰두했던 1970년대가 종교와 노동이라는, 관념과 물질의 양극단이 합쳐지는 특이성을 지녔다는 점에 주목하였다. 이에 조세희의 『난장이가 쏘아올린 작은 공』의 은강 연작과 ｢천사의 달｣을 텍스트로 삼아, 작중의 노동서사가 1970년대 기독교 노동운동 특히 산업선교회와 결합된 양상을 살폈다. 본론의 논의는 크게 세 가지로 나뉜다. 첫째, 은강으로 이주한 난장이의 자녀들이 노동운동에 합류하는 과정을 인천기독교도시산업선교회(인천산선)의 활동과 동일방직의 사례를 통해 살핀다. 둘째, 은강 연작의 노동운동관이 종교적 신념과 강하게 맞물려 주요 서사를 추동하고 있음을 알아본다. 큰아들 영수의 살인 및 죽음은 전태일로 대변되는 1970년대 노동운동계에 산재했던 죽음과 조응하며 종교적으로 의미화된다. 마지막으로는 『난쏘공』이 남긴 과제가 그 후속작인 ｢천사의 달｣에 반영되는 양상을 살핀다. 산업선교의 전성기 이후에 쓰인 조세희의 소설은 종교 단체에 의존한 노동운동의 형식이 시대적으로 부정되는 모습까지도 포괄하게 된다. 이상의 논의로부터 조세희 문학이 당대 노동운동의 현장 속에서 현실 변혁을 소명으로 삼는 구체적인 유토피아니즘을 추구했음을 살폈다.

This paper analyzes works of Cho Sehee, famous for his novel The Dwarf, under the influence of industrial missionary in South Korea in the 1970s. In the 1970s, Korea was experienced rapid industrialization led by the government, and as a result, many young people(especially women) were in very poor working conditions. Cho criticized the fact that the public could live a comfortable daily life based on the physical pain of these workers as a "sin." His The Dwarf dealt with a process in which dwarf’s children moved to a large industrial complex called "Eungang" and then participated in the labor movement. Eungang, a fictional industrial complex in this novel, was modeled on Incheon, a representative industrial complex in South Korea. At that time, Incheon was crowded with textile factories operated by a lot of manpower, so the ministry activities of the industrial missionary were active. Cho Sehee created a space called Eungang because this is not only the place where Korea's labor problem is most serious, but also the place where efforts to solve this labor problem have been made most urgently.
