한국 근대 문학사의 현장과 개신교선교사 : 헐버트, 존스, 게일이 증언한 한국어․문학 전변의 제양상
초록
한국의 개신교선교사들은 한국 근대문학 창작의 주체는 아니었다. 그렇지만 그들은 한국 근대문학이 형성되던 현장에서 한국인과 함께 한국어로 소통하며 살아간 내지인들이었다. 이와 관련하여 본고는 한국문학 논저를 집필했던 ‘선교사 겸학자’ 3인(게일(James Scarth Gale(奇一), 1863~1937), 헐버트(Homer Bezaleel Hulbert(訖法), 1863~1949), 존스(George Heber Jones(趙元時), 1867~1919))의 증언을 주목했다. 즉, 한국 근대문학 작품을 접촉하지 못했던 한국 개신교선교사, 헐버트와 존스가 남긴 기록들이자 한국학적 업적들, 한국 근대어․문학을 실제로 체험할 수 있었던 게일의 한국문학 담론을 함께 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 그들의 증언속에 담겨 있는 한국 근대문학사의 현장을 묘사해보고자 했다. 한국 개신교선교사들은 한국 근대문학사의 현장 속에서 한글이라는 민족문화의 유산을 발견하고, 이를 바탕으로 한국문학의 미래이자 한국 근대문학을 상상할 수 있었다. 더불어 이러한 그들의 전망에 부합된 한국어․문학이 형성되는 과정 속에서 그들은 한국어․문학을 외국어․문학으로 인식하며 이 현장에 참여했다.
Abstract
Although not the primary creators, Protestant missionaries were integral observers of the evolution of modern Korean literature, engaging deeply with the Korean language and locals during this transformative period. This study delves into the testimonies of three notable missionary scholars—James Scarth Gale (1863-1937), Homer Bezaleel Hulbert (1863-1949), and George Heber Jones (1867-1919)—who have made significant contributions to Korean literary discourse. While Hulbert and Jones had limited exposure to contemporary Korean literary works, Gale had firsthand experience with modern Korean language and literature, offering invaluable insights. This paper aims to portray the nuanced landscapes of modern Korean literary history through their diverse narratives. These missionaries unearthed the richness of national culture in Hangul, envisioning the trajectory of Korean literature and its ensuing modernization. Moreover, their engagement in this domain was characterized by perceiving Korean language and literature as a foreign entity, reflecting their unique viewpoints on the development of Korean linguistic and literary identity.
