이인직 문학의 주변(2) : 무라이 겐사이(村井弦斎)의 『피눈물』(血のなみだ)과 관련하여

한국 최초의 근대 문학 『혈의 누』를 이해하기 위해서는 작가 이인직의 생애, 그중에서도 그가 일본에서 체득한 문학이 어떠한 것이었는지 알아야 한다. 이인직이 일본에 체류하는 동안 일본 문단에서 가장 유행했던 것이 ‘가정소설’이다. 가정소설 작가 중 오늘날 거의 잊힌 작가인 무라이 겐사이(村井弦齋)는 중요하다. 그는 정치 논설 중심의 『호치 신문』 (報知新聞)이 대중 신문으로 변환하는 과정에서 그 신문에 통속적인 대중소설을 연재하여 당대 최고의 유행작가가 된다. 그리고 겐사이는 이인직의 『혈의 누』와 같은 제목의 소설인 『피눈물』(血のなみだ)이란 작품을 1895년 발표한다. 이 작품은 청일전쟁 후 러시아, 프랑스, 독일의 삼국간섭을 배경으로 한다. 삼국간섭으로 남편을 잃은 주인공 모녀가 고난을 겪다가 이를 극복하고, 그 딸이 성장한 후 결혼과 관련하여 여러 가지 에피소드가 발생한다는 이야기로 그 구조는 이인직의 『혈의 누』와 비슷하다. 또 ‘피눈물’이란 키워드를 매개로 외세에 의해 침탈당한 국권과 평범한 한 가정의 파탄 과정을 관련지어 그리고자 했던 두 작가의 창작 의도 또한 같다. 이는 정치소설의 통속화, 대중화 과정에 나타난 일본 가정소설의 계몽성과 상업적 통속성을 여실히 드러내는 것이고, 이 부분이 이인직 문학의 특징이기도 하다.

In order to understand Korea's first modern novel 『혈의 누』, it is necessary to know the life of writer Lee In-jik, especially the literature he experienced in Japan. During his stay in Japan, the most popular genre was ‘家庭小説-domestic novel’. Among them, Murai Kensai(村井弦齋), a writer who is almost forgotten today, is an important person. In the process of turning the political newspaper 『報知新聞』 into a popular newspaper, Kensai became the most popular writer by serializing Popular fictions. And he published the same title 『血のなみだ』 as Lee In-jik's 『혈의 누』 in 1895. The story structure of this work is similar to that of Lee In-jik's work, in which the main character mother and daughter, who lost their husband to the Sino-Japanese War, overcome hardships, and various episodes related to marriage occur after the daughter grows up. In addition, it can be seen that the two novelists' creative intentions to portray the national sovereignty invaded by foreign powers through the keyword ‘blood tears’ and the resulting collapse of an ordinary family are also the same.
