소통의 불가능성과 가능성의 형식 : 한강의 『희랍어 시간』을 중심으로

이 논문은 『희랍어 시간』에 나타난 소통의 불가능성과 가능성의 형식에 관해 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 한강의 소설은 섬세한 언어 표현을 통해 언어나 글쓰기의 문제를 지속적으로 사유해 나간다. 이러한 특징에 비해 한강 소설은 주로 『채식주의자』 등에 나타난 에코페미니즘의 경향이나 『소년이 온다』를 중심으로 역사적 재현과 애도의 측면이 연구되었다. 이 논문은 『희랍어 시간』을 통해 연구의 한계를 보완하고 한강 소설이 지닌 고유의 시학을 발견하려는 목적을 지닌다. 『희랍어 시간』은 한강 소설 중 언어와 소통의 문제를 전면에 다룬다는 점에서 독특한 위치를 점유한다. 동시에 『희랍어 시간』은 언어가 기호의 영역을 넘어 윤리적 차원으로 확대된다. 이러한 점에서 『희랍어 시간』은 한강 소설에 일관되게 흐르는 주제의식을 언어와 소통의 문제로 풀어낸다는 특이성이 있다. 따라서 『희랍어 시간』에 나타난 언어 형식을 고찰하는 작업은 한강 소설 시학의 특징과 그것의 가치를 규명하는 데에 의의가 있다.

『희랍어 시간』에서 언어는 인간 존재의 거주 방식을 상징한다. 일찍이 하이데거는 인간이 언어로 거주하는 존재라고 말한 바 있다. 이에 주목할 때, 『희랍어 시간』의 작중인물들이 겪는 소통에의 장애는 그들이 삶에 적용한 형식의 불완전함과 관련이 있다. 여자는 의미의 우글거림 속에 살아가나 그것을 체계화 할 언어 형식이 부재한다. 또한 남자는 의미를 논리적으로 구축할 수 있지만 그 형식은 존재가 거주할 수 없는 공허한 대상이다. 그들은 가능성의 형식을 되찾기 위해 낯선 언어, 즉 희랍어의 세계에 몰입한다. 희랍어는 정교한 체계를 갖췄으면서도 의미의 차이화를 용인하는 독특한 언어이다. 그렇지만 희랍어는 두 사람의 삶에 공통된 의미를 되돌려 줄 언어의 시원으로 기능하지 못한다. 희랍어는 그들의 삶과 유리된 언어에 속하기 때문이다.

『희랍어 시간』에서 언어는 불완전한 형식을 지닌 작중인물들이 접촉하며 충돌 할 때, 가능성의 형식으로 전환된다. 이때 여자와 남자는 분할된 소통의 형식을 유지하면서도 의미를 온전히 전달하는 단수성을 이룬다. 『희랍어 시간』에서 그것은 연인의 공동체로 표상된다. 연인의 형상은 서로의 불완전함을 인정하고 차이를 용인하며 구축된 가능성의 형식이다. 그것은 과거와 달리 그들의 삶에 사랑과 자유, 신뢰와 연대 등의 인륜적 정신을 생성한다. 이때 언어의 문제는 기호의 차원을 초월하여 인간 존재와 윤리의 영역으로 이행한다. 다시 말해, 『희랍어 시간』에서 상실된 언어는 공동체를 지탱할 윤리가 두 작중인물의 삶에 정박할 때 도래한다. 이것이 『희랍어 시간』이 언어와 형식을 통해 형상하고자 한 윤리의 실천이다.

This paper aims to explore the impossibility of communication and the form of possibility through “The Greek Lecture” in Gang-Han's novels. While previous studies have focused on the eco-feminist perspective in “Vegetarian” and the historical context in “Human Acts”, this paper has a purpose to uncover the poetics of Han's novels by examining “The Greek Lecture.” This particular work stands out for its exploration of language and communication. By examining the form of language in “The Greek Lecture,” we can gain an insight into the broader poetics of Han's novels.

According to Heidegger, language is the house of being, and human lives in the way of language. Similarly, the language in “The Greek Lecture” symbolizes the way of life for the two main characters. Their communication disorders are related to incomplete language forms. While the woman can hear the voice of being, she lacks an appropriate form to interpret it, whereas the man has a logical construction for communication but cannot contain the meaning of being. “The Greek Lecture” explores how to restore the broken system of meaning, and the main characters turn to the Greek language to achieve this goal.

However, the exotic language alone cannot provide a solution. To regain the right system of meaning, the two incomplete forms must collide. This happens incidentally when the main characters face each other's weaknesses, leading to the formation of a community of lovers. The community of lovers is a form of possibility that is constructed by embracing their incompleteness and differences. As a result, ethical values such as solidarity, love, liberty, and trust are generated in their lives. The matter of language form and communication in “The Greek Lecture” shifts from semiotics to ethics, suggesting that ethical values are the key to overcoming the impossibility of communication.

In conclusion, an impossibility of communication gets over, when ethical values settle down in human being’s lives. This is the practice of ethics that “The Greek Lecture” shows through the matter of language and communication.
