1990년 전후 장정일의 장르 넘나들기와 독자의 아마추어리즘

이 논문은 1990년대 전후 복수 장르 선택의 문화적 배경 속에서 장정일 소설의 장르 접합 실험의 특성을 분석하고, 이것이 독자의 반응으로 이어지는 현상을 고찰하는 데 목적을 둔다. 장정일은 시, 소설, 희곡 등 여러 장르를 넘나들며 창작 활동을 했다. 또한, 그는 소설에 신문 기사나 문학 비평, 자작시나 희곡, 시나리오 등을 삽입했으며, 소설의 문체나 이미지로 재즈적 글쓰기를 실험하기도 했다. 이 같은 장정일의 장르 넘나들기에 대해 당시 비평계에서는 포스트모더니즘 맹신, 새로운 감수성과 형식이라는 상반된 반응을 보였다. 그리고 장정일의 장르 실험에 대해 독자에게 미칠 부정적 영향을 우려하거나 독자가 판단할 몫이라며 판단을 유보했다. 이 같은 관점은 장정일 신드롬을 구성했던 당대 독자의 역량을 비판자가 아니라 소비자로 한정하는 담론과 이어져 있었다.
장정일의 창작 방식은 장르 이론과 역사의 범주를 가볍게 만들고, 분류법적 확실성과 작가의 유형화 그리고 이들의 역사적 안정성을 교란한다. 장르 규범을 넘어서고 그것에 균열을 일으키는 작가의 창작 행위는 장르의 성립·유지·변형·통합·파괴에 직간접적으로 영향을 미치는 독자의 독서 행위와 밀접한 관련을 맺는다. 잡지와 온라인 서점의 독자 서평에서 알 수 있듯 장정일의 장르 넘나들기는 독자의 아마추어리즘과 만나, 장르 위계나 선험적 구분의 질서를 흐트러뜨리고 혼종의 문학적 가치를 해석하는 의미 실천 단계로 나아간다. 이는 장정일의 장르 실험이 1990년대 문학의 자본화를 넘어 문학의 민주화에 대한 가능성을 새롭게 열어주었음을 의미한다.
Abstract
This paper tries to analyze the characteristics of genre articulation experiment of Jang Jeong-il's novels on the cultural background of selecting multiple genres around 1990's and consider how the genre experiments of him affects readers. Jang Jeong-il has made his works in several genres i.e. poetry, novel, play, etc.. Also, he had inserted newspaper articles, literary reviews, his own poems, plays, scenarios, etc. in his novels and performed experiment making variations in writing style and images in novels, which was called as jazz style writing by himself. Related with these kinds of trials of Jang Jeong-il, critics of those times responded in two opposite ways of calling his works as blind belief for postmodernism or accepting those as a new kind of sensitivity and form. In those days, they did not judge his genre experiments with saying that the judgement is up to the readers or worried about negative effects to the readers. This perspective is related with the discourse in which the capability of the readers was treated as not that of a critic but that of a consumer.
Jang Jeong-il's writing style does not give too much importance to the theory and history of genres and throws certainty of literary classification, categorization of writers, and their historical stability into confusion. His creation, which crosses and cracks norms of genre, is closely related to reading activities of readers that affect directly and indirectly to establishment, continuance, transformation, integration, and destruction of genres. As we can see from the reviews of the readers in the magazines and online bookstores, Jang Jeong-il's genre crossover stepped up to a phase in which the readers eager to analyze and extract their own meaning from his works. This means that his genre experiment pioneered a possibility of literary democratization while going beyond capitalism in the literature.
