1990년대 한국의 『은하영웅전설』수용에 관한 고찰 : 1990년대 초반 베스트셀러와의 비교 연구

1991년에 번역된 『은하영웅전설 (은영전)』은 90년대 선풍적인 인기를 누리며 오늘날까지 많은 관심을 받고 있다. 본 논문은 90년대 베스트셀러인 『상실의 시대』(1989)와 『영원한 제국』(1993)을 『은영전』을 비교해 90년대 담론 질서 속에서 『은영전』을 파악하기로 한다.

『상실의 시대』는 한국에서 거대담론이 실추한 90년대의 정서를 대변한 작품으로 많은 화제를 모았는데 『은영전』도 절대적인 신념에 대한 회의를 그리며 『상실의 시대』와 유사한 주제의식을 담고 있다. 『상실의 시대』와 더불어 『은영전』은 90년대에 유행한 해체주의를 반영하고 있었다.

한편, 『영원한 제국』은 ‘정조 신드롬’이나 ‘박정희 신드롬’과 같이 보수적인 권위가 부활하는 90년대 분위기를 표현해 베스트셀러의 반열에 올랐다. 이에 반해, 『은영전』은 영웅서사의 형식을 빌려 다양한 관점에서 역사를 끊임없이 상대화했다. 90년대에 『은영전』은 역사의 권위를 탈구축하며 『영원한 제국』과는 상반된 관점을 제시하는 데 성공했다.

이와 같은 비교 연구를 통해 『은영전』은 해체주의와 상대주의를 형상화해 90년대에 독자적인 위치를 차지하고 있음을 알 수 있다.

Translated in 1991, Legend of the Galactic Heroes (LOGH) enjoyed popularity in Korea. In order to understand LOGH in the context of 1990s, this paper compares LOGH with the bestselling novels like Norwegian Wood and Eternal Empire.

Murakami Haruki’s Norwegian Wood was famous in Korea for describing the mentality of the people who suffered the collapse of the grand narrative. LOGH also depicted the skepticism about absolute beliefs, so it contained a theme similar to Norwegian Wood. Along with Norwegian Wood, LOGH tried to incorporate the thought of deconstruction which was in fashion in the 1990s.

Meanwhile, Eternal Empire became a bestseller by representing the revival of conservatism. In contrast to Eternal Empire, LOGH challenged the authority of history. Consequently, LOGH constantly defamiliarized history by adopting various perspectives.

Through this comparative study, we can understand that LOGH established unparalleled position in the 1990s by embodying deconstruction and relativism.
