이호철의 1960년대 기독교 비판에 대한 연구 : ‘세속화 논쟁’과 <고여 있는 바닥>을 중심으로

｢고여 있는 바닥｣(『현대문학』, 1965.6)은 이후 작품집들에 실리지 않아 거의 잊힌 작품이다. 연구도 이루어진 바가 없다. 본 연구는 ｢고여 있는 바닥｣과 1960년대 한국 기독교 신학의 중심에 세속화 논쟁이 있고, ｢고여 있는 바닥｣이 세속화론을 통해 보다 구체적으로 규명될 수 있다고 본다. 『기독교사상』과 『사상계』에 실린 세속화 신학을 우선 고찰하였다. 그리고 이와 관련하여 이호철의 ｢고여 있는 바닥｣의 기독교 풍자와 비판을 규명하고 있다. 『기독교사상』지를 통해 본격적인 신학 논쟁, 즉 세속화 논쟁이 벌어진다. 특히 『사상계』에서는 강원룡이 세속화론에 입각해 당대 기독교의 광신주의와 위선을 비판한다. ｢고여 있는 바닥｣ 역시 이 두 가지 방향성에서 당대 기독교를 비판, 풍자한다. 아래 교회(성결교회)를 통해서 기독교의 광신주의를 비판한다. 언덕 교회(장로교회)를 통해서는 기독교의 위선과 바리새적 분리주의 그리고 교회 간 경쟁과 적대를 비판한다. 교회 간 경쟁과 적대의 근원에는 한국교회의 특징인 개교회주의 운영 원리가 자리 잡고 있었다. 두 가지 방향에 이루어지는 ｢고여 있는 바닥｣의 1960년대 기독교 비판은 현재에도 유효성을 잃지 않는 비판이라는 점에서 중요한 의미를 갖는다.

“A Pooled Floor” (“Contemporary Literature”, June 1965) was almost forgotten as it was not published in the later works. No research has been conducted on this either. This study sees the secularization debate at the center of Korean Christian theology in the 1960s. Therefore, this study first considered the secularization theology published in “Gidokgyosasang” and “Sasang”. And in this regard, this study investigated the satire and criticism of Christinity in Lee Ho-cheol's “A Pooled Floor”. Kang Won-ryong criticizes the fanaticism and hypocrisy of Christianity in the 1960s, based on the theory of secularization. “A Pooled Floor” also criticizes and satirizes Christianity in two directions. “A Pooled Floor” criticizes Christian fanaticism through the church below (Holiness Church), and through Hill Church (Presbyterian Church), it criticizes Christian hypocrisy and Pharisaic separatism, as well as competition and hostility between churches. The Christian criticism of “A Pooled Floor” has an important meaning in that it is a criticism that does not lose its validity even today.
