“제2의 성”이라는 명제의 서사화 : 박완서의 1980년대 여성 해방 소설을 중심으로

본 논문은 박완서의 『서 있는 여자』(1985)가 시몬 드 보부아르의 “제2의 성(The Second Sex)”이라는 당대의 유력한 여성 해방 명제를 공유하면서도 해방이 단순히 이론을 통한 각성만으로는 충분하지 않을 수 있음을 드러냈다는 점에서 한층 발전된 관점을 제시하고 있다고 보았다. 여성에 대한 “이중구속(Double bind)”이 심각했던 1980년대 한국 사회를 배경으로 하는 『서 있는 여자』에서 시도되고 있는 “평등한 결혼”은 여성 억압을 자연이 아닌 사회 제도의 문제로 보고 이를 극복하기 위해 기획된 것으로, 당대의 이상적 규범이기도 한 중산층 핵가족 모델을 비판했다는 점에서 보부아르의 사상과 공명하는 대목이 있다. 나아가 『서 있는 여자』는 “평등한 결혼”이 좌초하는 서사를 통해 진정한 해방을 위해서는 육체를 단순히 극복해야 할 것으로 볼 것이 아니라, 육체의 “취약성(주디스 버틀러, Vulnerability)”을 적극적으로 수용하고 어머니를 비롯한 다른 몸과 연대하는 시도가 필요하다는 지점을 보여줬다는 데 주목할 필요가 있다. 본고는 보부아르의 “제2의 성”이라는 명제와의 비교를 통해 『서 있는 여자』가 당대의 여성주의 이론을 적극적으로 수용하면서도 이론과 현실 사이의 갈등을 가시화했다는 점에서 그 의미가 있다는 점을 밝히고자 한다.

This study noted that the thesis of “The Second Sex” by Simone de Beauvoir, one of the major Western feminist theories, has been widely accepted in Korean society since 1975, and influenced Park Wan-seo’s creation of women’s liberation novels published in the 1980s. In addition, this paper attempted to reveal that Park Wan-seo’s novel presents a more advanced perspective in that it attempted to find a specific direction of practice beyond the gap between theory and reality through a narrative in which the “equal marriage” plan fails. The “equal marriage” attempted against the background of Korean society in the 1980s, when there was a “double bind” against women, was designed to overcome the social system, the origin of women’s oppression. In addition, this “equal marriage” model resonates with Beauvoir’s idea in that it criticized the middle-class nuclear family model, which was also the ideal norm of the time. Furthermore, the narrative of the failure of “equal marriage” was considered important in that it suggested the need to actively accept physical vulnerabilities and attempt to unite with other bodies, including mothers. This paper considered it meaningful in that “Standing Woman” actively accepted the feminist theory of the time while visualizing the conflict between theory and reality through comparison with Beauvoir’s proposition of “The Second Sex”.
