이효석의 번역소설 ｢밀항자｣와 ｢기원후 비너스｣의 번역 양상과 의미

이 논문은 이효석의 번역소설 ｢밀항자｣와 ｢기원후 비너스｣가 번역된 양상과 번역이 그의 창작에 미친 영향을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 했다. 이효석의 번역소설은 그가 본격적인 창작 활동에 나서게 되는 시기에 집중해 있으며, 식민지 조선에서 한 번도 번역된 적이 없었던 텍스트라는 점에서 주목을 끈다. 그러나 원저자 혹은 원작이 유명하지 않다는 이유 등으로 관련 연구가 진척되지 않아 두 텍스트는 아직 그 저본조차 밝혀지지 않은 상태다. 본고는 ｢밀항자｣가 Selected English Short Stories(2nd Series)에 실린 “The Stowaway”를 직역한 결과라는 것을, ｢비너스｣는 『キツプリングの短篇小説』(馬場恒吾 譯)에 수록된 ｢ヴイナス｣와 원문 “Venus Annodomini”를 함께 참고한 결과라는 사실을 밝혔다. 이효석은 일역을 참고했음에도 원문에 매우 충실한 번역을 수행한 한편 (무)의식적인 전유를 통해 원작의 주제를 미묘하게 변주하는 모습을 보여줬다. 이러한 번역 체험은 그가 모범으로 삼는 간결하고 암시적인 문체를 만드는 데 이바지했을뿐더러 작품세계의 변모에도 일정한 영향을 미쳤다. 그것은 확장된 시공간 속에서 운명의 중압감을 벗어난 주체를 탄생케 하고, 세대 갈등의 형태로 젊음과 열정의 편을 옹호하는 서사로 나아가는 것을 촉진하는 계기가 되었다.

This paper aims to reveal the translated aspects of two short stories “The Stowaway” and “Venus Annodomini” and the impacts of the translations of Lee Hyo-Seok on his creation. These translated stories draw attention because they are set at a time when he was engaged in full-fledged creative activities and had also never been translated in colonized Chosun. Previous studies have not revealed the draft versions of the translations because the original author or the original work are not famous. This paper clarifies that “Milhangja” was the result of direct translation of “The Stowaway” contained in Selected English Short Stories(2nd Series), and the draft of “Giwonhu Venus” was Kipling’s Short Stories (Baba Tsunego Trans.), which includes the original text “Venus Annodomin” and the translated version “Wuinas” in Japanese. Lee Hyo-Seok performed a faithful translation of the original text, though he referred to the Japanese translation of the text. He subtly changed the subject of the original text through (un)conscious appropriation. This translation experience not only contributed to the creation of a concise and implicit style that he recognized as a model but also transformed the world of his literary works in a certain part. It served as an opportunity to create a subject that escaped the pressure of fate in the expanded space-time and form a narrative that advocates for youth and passion in the form of generational conflict.
