모순과 지양 : ｢삼대｣ 재론

염상섭의 소설에 대한 기존의 논의는 주제론에 편중되었다. 그러나 소설로서의 완성을 추구하는 염상섭의 소설 창작에서 방법은 주제 못지않게 고려되었다. 방법을 탐구하고 방법론을 구축하는 과정이 그의 소설적 이력에서 일관된 흐름으로 목격된다. ｢삼대｣는 성숙한 작가 의식의 소산으로 평가되지만 그 이면에는 방법에 대한 그의 노력이 자리한다. 방법적 숙련 과정이 있었기에 ｢삼대｣에서 성숙한 작가 의식이 구현될 수 있었다. ｢삼대｣ 이전까지 그는 고백체와 재현, 논설, 추리를 방법으로 갖추었다. 그 방법들은 작품에 따라 긍정적인 효과를 거두기도 했고 그렇지 않기도 했다. ｢삼대｣에서는 그 방법들이 절제와 조화를 이룸으로써 작품의 완성도를 높일 수 있었다. 반어라는 현상이 ｢삼대｣에 나타난 것도 그 방법들이 이룬 조화와 절제가 부른 효과로 파악된다. ｢삼대｣가 식민지 시대 최고의 사실주의 소설로 평가를 받게 된 이면에는 방법적 성과가 자리한다. 본 논문은 그러한 면을 주목하여 논의를 전개하였다.

The existing discussion of Yeom Sang-seop's novel was biased toward the subject matter. However, Yeom Sang-seop's method of creating a novel, which seeks to complete as a novel, should be considered as much as the theme. The process of exploring methods and building methodologies is witnessed in a consistent flow in his novel career. Sam Dae(means ‘Three Generations’) is regarded as the product of mature writer consciousness, but behind it lies his efforts on how to do it. A mature writer's consciousness could be realized in Sam Dae because of the methodical proficiency process. Before the Three Generations, he was equipped with confession style, reproducibility, editorials and reasoning. The methods were both positive and not positive depending on the work. In Sam Dae the methods were able to enhance the completeness of the work by harmonizing with moderation. The fact that the phenomenon of irony appeared in Sam Dae is also understood to be the effect of the harmony and moderation achieved by the methods. Behind the fact that Sam Dae has been evaluated as one of the best realism novels of the colonial era is its methodical achievement. This paper developed the discussion by taking note of that aspect.
