최서해의 개작과 검열

이 글은 최서해 소설을 사례로 삼아 개작과 검열 문제를 논의했다. 그의 소설 개작은 1920년대 소설의 신체성을 확보하는 사례로서 계몽적 논설을 벗어나 ‘체험의 기록서사’에서 ‘민족 재현의 리얼리티’를 담은 ‘새로운 경향’을 형성하며 근대소설로 이행하는 과정을 잘 보여준다.이 글에서는 그의 개작이 근대소설 양식을 확보하는 한편, 계급적 각성에 따른 정치성을 획득함으로써 일제의 검열과 직접 대면하는 것은 필연적이었다는 점을 살펴보았다. 또한 그가 생전에 간행한 작품집 두 권에 주목하여 작품선별의 기준을 살펴보았고, 이 과정에서 수록작 선별 기준이 작가로서의 자기 정체성을 고려하는 것이면서도 출판 검열을 의식하는 일면을 짚어보았다. 또한 최서해의 검열관과 검열로 피해입은 사례를 논의하면서 게재 금지된 작품을 개제하여 다른 잡지에 수록한 사례도 검토해 보았다. 또한 이 글에서는 그의 소설에서 뚜렷한 근대의 국가장치에 대한 서술 결여가 자기검열과도 관련 있다는 점과 함께, 검열기제의 경로에서 정치성을 보존하기 위한 ‘작품 생존술’이자 ‘자기검열의 글쓰기’의 특징이 무엇인지를 살펴보았다.

This article investigated the remake and censorship based on the case of Choi, Seo-hae’s novels. His novels is a case of securing the physicality of a 1920s novel, beyond the enlightening editorial writing. His novel, remake described well for the procedure move to modern novel by forming ‘new trend’ including ‘reality of the nation-repesentation’ from the history of experience. His Remake looked at the fact that it was inevitable to face Japanese censorship by acquiring political motivation based on class awakening while securing modern novel style. He also looked at the criteria for selecting works by paying attention to the two works he published during his lifetime. In the process, this article pointed out that the criteria for selecting works in the album is to consider self-identity as a writer, but also to be aware of censorship in publishing. In addition, the censor of Choi, Seo-hae was identified as an example of another magazine by changing the title of a work that was banned from being published due to censorship. In this article, it was also examined the characteristics of 'self-censorship writing' as a 'work survival technique' to preserve politics in the censorship system, as well as the lack of a clear description of modern state devices in his novel.
