억압의 소리와 희망의 소리 사이 : 이북명 소설에 나타난 기계와 인간의 관계

이 논문은 이북명 소설에 나타난 인간과 기계의 관계가 그의 작품에서 어떻게 재현되는지 식민지시기에 창작된 소설들을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 이북명이 공장을 재현한 식민지시기 소설에서 공통적으로 등장하는 기계소리는 항상 경쾌하고 밝은 미래를 전망한다. 그러나 이북명 소설의 노동자들은 기계에 의해 부상을 당하고, 질병을 얻는 등 기계와 적대 관계에 있는 것처럼 보인다. 다른 한편으로, 사회주의자 지식인들은 노동자들과 달리 기계소리에서 자신들의 이념적 이상을 달성할 희망을 본다. 이러한 식민지시기 소설들의 특성은 그가 북한에서 발표한 소설들과 비교해보았을 때 더욱 명확히 드러난다. 그가 북한에서 발표한 소설은 시각적 이미지로 기계를 재현하여, 보다 구체적으로 기계가 사회의 발전에 어떻게 기여할 수 있는지 제시한다. 결론적으로 이북명의 식민지시기 소설은 청각적 이미지를 활용하여 당시 낮은 과학적 지식과 기술에 접근하기 어려운 식민지 조선의 환경에서도 기계가 앞으로 새로운 사회의 도래에 기여할 수 있다는 긍정적인 전망을 재현해내었다.

This paper examines the relationship between humans and machines in Yi Pukmyŏng’s short stories. The machine sound seems to hear that prospecting hopeful future in his colonial period stories representing a factory complex. However, the labourers look like resisting machines that harm their bodies and worsen their health. On the other hand, socialist intellectuals find hope in achieving their socialist ideal in the machine sound. In his literature, I compare these stories with his other works published in North Korea to analyze the relationship between humans and machines. His literature in North Korea suggests how the machines contribute to social development with their visual images. In conclusion, his stories published in the colonial period represent how the machines contribute to imagining the new society with acoustic images, nevertheless colonialism, which prevented the chances to access scientific knowledge and technology.
