과거를 위한 죄와 벌의 서사 : 이기영의 『신개지』(1938)를 중심으로

이 글에서는 이기영의 『신개지』를 중심으로 작품에 나타난 시간성을 인물의 윤리적인 의식과 연계시켜서 살펴보고자 했다. 『신개지』는 죄의식과 수치심의 문제를 집요하게 다루고 있는 작품이다. 작품은 처음부터 끝까지 죄의식의 문제를 내려놓지 않는다. 죄의식을 짊어지는 행위를 통해서 불행한 시대에 불행한 운명을 살았던 이들에 대한 기억을 보존하고자 한다. 작가는 계급성의 표출이 차단된 상황에서 작품의 윤리성과 이상성을 강화한다. 이를 보여주는 인물이 강윤수, 하월숙, 김순남이다. 이들은 금전이 지배하는 철의 시대에 맞서는 성찰의 시간, 속죄의 시간, 정지된 시간을 보여준다. 특히 순남이는 잃어버린 이름과 사랑을 찾아서 순결한 과거로 돌아가고자 한다. 이 시도는 근대적인 시간의 질주 앞에서 지연되고 좌절되지만, 남은 자들에게 죄책감을 남긴다. 윤리적인 인간으로 남고자 하는 한, 그 누구도 죄의식에서 자유로울 수 없다. 그러므로 『신개지』는 과거를 위한, 과거를 지향했던 순남이를 위한, 순남이를 구하지 못한 윤리적인 인간을 위한 죄와 벌의 서사다.
Abstract
In this article, Lee Gi-yeong's “Shingaeji” was to examine the time characteristics of the work in connection with the ethical consciousness of the person. “Shingaeji” is a work that persistently deals with the problems of guilt and shame. The work never puts down the problem of guilt from beginning to end. Through the act of carrying a sense of guilt, we intend to preserve the memory of those who lived an unfortunate fate in an unhappy era. The author strengthens the morality and ideal of the work in a situation where the expression of class is blocked.
The main characters of this show are Kang Yoon-soo, Ha Wol-sook, and Kim Soon-nam. They show the time of idleness, the time of atonement, and the time of Kairos against the iron age dominated by money. In particular, Sun-nam wants to go back to his innocent past in search of his lost name and love. This attempt is delayed and frustrated in the face of the modern sprint of time, but leaves guilt for the rest. As long as one wishes to remain an ethical human being, no one can be free from guilt.
