Abstract

This article will focus on female scriveners in the 「Winter Square」, a short novel by Lee Chung joon, and approached the social historical aspect of the 1970s to explain the meaning of short story and tries to grasp the writer's consciousness. From his first novel 「discharge」 in 1965, 「the unwritten Autobiography」(1969), into the 70’s, 「Wall of Rumors」(1971), 「Mr. Cho Man deuk」(1976), 「A Wonderful Missing」(1979), and 「Winter Square」(1979), all of which are mentally ill. In the Lee’s short story about ‘Mental Abnormalities’ before 「Winter Square」, the main character is mostly a male intellectual. However, while 「discharge」 and five other main characters are men, 「Winter Square」 deals with the mentality of the female lead.

In previous discussions, the characters of the short story, which deals with ‘mental abnormalities’, are characterized by childhood anxiety and personal experience of Lee Chung joon. However, the main character of 「Winter Square」 is a woman and it is considered difficult to handle in the extension of the preceding discussion. This article approaches the social historical aspect of the 1970s to explain its meaning and tries to grasp the writer's consciousness. This is also that previous discussions neglected.

And also, It is noteworthy that 「Winter Square」 published in the late 70s. During this period, the square was blocked by the Park Chung-hee administration, which took power through the 5.16 military coup. 「Winter Square」 is reporting on this coercive power system and writing down the hope that the oppressed people will regain their freedom. Inthatsense, thetitle 「Winter Square」 appears to be meaningful, and indicates that the main character is exploring the possibilities of gaining life’s hope on his own at the square.

This artcle tries to analyze the fantasy of main character based on Deleuze and Guattari. And then, tries to re-examine the critical perception of' Lee Chung joon’s patriarchy in keeping with the times of the 70s. Finally, this article hopes to explain what the square is like and what the symbolic meaning of it is.
