학교라는 장치와 웃음의 역학 : 염상섭의 ｢지선생(池先生)｣을 중심으로
초록
본고는 염상섭이 1930년에 발표한 ｢지선생(池先生)｣을 분석의 대상으로 삼아, 식민지 조선의 학교 안에서 규율에 대한 복종과 저항을 동시에 실현하는 지선생의 모습을 살필 것이다. 이 작품의 시간적 배경은 학생들이 만세 운동을 벌이고, 학교에서 조선인 교사들이 점차 퇴출되는 시기였다. 이런 시기에 지선생은 교실 바닥에 침을 뱉고, 수업 시간에 술을 마신 후 졸기를 일삼는다. 그럼에도 학생들은 학교에 마지막 남은 조선인 선생인 그를 애정과 연민을 갖고 대한다. 매일 학교에 가장 먼저 출근할 만큼 성실하지만 학교 안에서는 규율에 벗어나는 행동을 서슴지 않는 지선생은 독자들의 웃음을 자아내는 동시에, 학교의 규율에 균열을 내는 기능도 담당한다. 무기력해 보이는 지선생의 기이한 행동들이 근대식 학교, 더 나아가 식민지 제도에 균열을 낼 수 있는 촉매제로 읽힐 수 있는 이유는 그 행동들에서 파생되는 웃음 때문이다. 그 웃음은 소설 속의 학생들에게뿐 아니라 이 소설의 독자들에게까지 전파되어 저항과 연대의 가능성을 보여준다.
Abstract
This paper analyzes ｢Ji Seonsaeng｣ by Yeom Sang-Seop published in 1930 and examines regulations for Joseon students by school and Ji Seonsaeng who observes the rules and at the same time escapes from them. This work is against a background of the period when students were conducting the independence movements and Joseon teachers were gradually being kicked out from school. In such a period, Ji Seonsaeng spits on the floor of the classroom, dozing during class habitually after drinking. Nonetheless, students express affection for and sympathy with Ji Seonsaeng, a last Joseon teacher who was left at school. Ji Seonsaeng, sincere enough to go to work before anyone else but deviant from regulations at school, also functions both evoking a laugh and destroying regulations. The reason why Ji Seonsaeng, seemingly inactive may have significance is that laughter derived from such an image has a possibility of resistance and solidarity.
