염상섭의 『채석장의 소년』론

이 글은 분석 대상은 염상섭의 소년소설 『채석장의 소년』이다. 소년소설의 외피를 쓰고 있는 이 작품은 단순한 소년소설이 아니라 해방공간에서의 시대적인 과제와 민족적인 전망에 대한 염상섭의 진단과 해법을 투사하는 알레고리적 축도로 해석하고자 하는 게 이 글의 기본 전제이다. 그 축도와 관련하여 완식이의 복학 문제는 이 작품의 핵심 모티프로 기능하고 있다. 그리고 창규의 실신 및 완식이 가족의 이사와 규상이와 영길이를 정점으로 하는 두 집단 사이의 갈등과 화해가 그것을 뒷받침하는 종속 모티프로 기능하고 있다. 창규의 실신과 완식이 가족의 이사 모티프는 주택난과 식량 위기로 인한 해방공간의 민생 문제에 대한 해법을 투사하는 알레고리적 장치로 기능하고 있다. 규상이와 영길이를 정점으로 하는 두 집단 사이의 갈등과 화해 모티프는 당시 헤게모니를 둘러싸고서 각축을 벌이던 각 정당이나 사회 단체들 간의 갈등과 대립 및 그 해법을 투사하는 알레고리적 장치로 기능하고 있다.

해방공간에서 시급하게 해결해야 할 시대적 과제 및 민족적 전망의 수립과 관련하여 염상섭이 제시한 진단과 해법은 두 가지이다. 하나는 당시 조선이 처한 산적한 과제를 해결하는 합리적인 대안으로 염상섭은 무조건적인 환대와 공동체적 부조의 윤리에 기초한 협력과 연대의 가치를 제시하고 있다. 이와 더불어 염상섭은 민주주의의 올바른 이해와 실천 문제 또한 절실한 시대적 과제로 인식하고 있다. 그리고 염상섭은 해방공간에서의 조선이 시급하게 해결해야 할 두 가지 시대적 과제인 협력과 연대의 가치 및 민주주의의 올바른 이해와 실천의 주체들로 소년들을 상정하고 있다. 이러한 서사 설정을 통해 염상섭은 민족의 미래를 개척해나갈 주역으로 상정한 소년들에 대한 자신의 강력한 기대와 신뢰를 투사하고 있다.

The analytical object of this article is the Yeom Sang-seop’s 『A Boy of the Quarry』. This work is just not a boy novel, but a allegorical miniature which projects the diagnosis and solution of Yeom Sang-seop to the periodical challenges and national outlook in the 1945-1948. In relation to this reduced drawing, problem of Wansik,‘s going back to school functioned core motif of this work. And Chang gyu’s blackout, house-moving of Wansik,‘s family and confliction and compromise between Gyu sang’s powers and Young gil’s powers functioned dependent motif which supports the core motif. Motif of Chang gyu’s blackout and house-moving of Wansik,‘s family functioned allegorical device which projects Yeom Sang-seop’s solution to the problem of public walfare in the 1945-1948. The confliction and compromise between Gyu sang’s powers and Young gil’s powers functioned allegorical device which projects Yeom Sang-seop’s solution to the confliction and complication among each parties and social organizations.

In relation to periodical challenges and national outlook which should resolve urgentiy in the 1945-1948, Yeom Sang-seop suggested two diagnosis and solutions. One is the value of collaboration and solidarity which based on the unconditional hospitality and community morals. In addition to the value of collaboration and solidarity, he recognised problem of correct understanding and practice to the democracy too as urgent periodical challenges. Besides, he suppose boys as the subjects of two solutions and challenges which should resolve urgently in the 1945-1948. Through this narrative frames, he projects his powerful belief and hope to the boys.
