Abstract
This study aims to examine the revision patterns of Choi Jin-young’s short story “Sunday” and to elucidate their significance. Through revision, Choi Jin-young examines from multiple perspectives the problems faced by adolescents both inside and outside the social safety net, while sharply criticizing the ills embedded in the socioeconomic structure of contemporary Korean society.
Based on an analysis of the revision patterns, this study identifies three major narrative implications: the internalization of violence and the imposition of individualized guilt; the emotional rupture caused by class differentiation; and the confrontation between human alienation and existential warmth. In the revised book edition, the mechanisms through which the prejudices and stereotypes of others lead the first-person narrator, “I,” to internalize violence and experience distorted guilt are rendered more clearly. The story also depicts with greater subtlety how the pure friendship among “I,” Minju, and Dou is fractured by socioeconomic disparities, thereby increasing the emotional distance among the characters. Furthermore, by juxtaposing the alienation experienced by “I” and Dou with the existential warmth that persists between them even amid their suffering, the revised version concentrates the narrative tension in the final scene.
By examining the revision patterns of “Sunday” and their significance, this study elucidates the enhanced narrative coherence achieved through revision and highlights the social role that the work performs as young adult literature.
