Abstract
This study aims to analyze the self-referential narrative strategies and the functioning of the enunciative “I” in Shin Kyung-sook's novel ≪The lone room≫, exploring the space of autobiography constructed by the work and the reading conventions it generates. Since its publication, ≪The lone room≫ has been associated with various genres such as labor novels, after-story novels, novelist novels, and autobiographical novels. It has been interpreted as a work that foregrounds the “ambiguity” between fiction and fact, particularly through its self-definition as “a piece of writing that is neither fact nor fiction, but something in between.” This paper focuses on how this ambiguity serves as a narrative device that specifically invites readers to engage in a certain mode of reading.
To this end, this research draws theoretical foundations from Wayne Clayson Booth’s and Seymour Benjamin Chatman's concepts of the “Implied author/Implied reader,” Jean Paul Gustave Ricoeur's “Triple Mimesis,” and discussions on “Autofiction.” Particularly centered on the external and internal structures of ≪The lone room≫, the analysis examines how the “I” within the work traverses and constructs the levels of narrator, character, and author. In this context, the “I” in the work functions not merely as a simple first-person narrator but also suggests an identity with the actual author without ever fully confirming it. This paper posits that such self-referential strategies do not erase the distance between the real author and the narrator but rather transform into an effect of “authenticity,” producing a code that prompts readers to interpret the narrator “I”'s writing as an autobiographical confession of the real author.
Furthermore, this study critically examines existing discussions on the ethics of representation that reduce representation to the solitary act of the author. Through Ricoeur's concept of mimesis III, it argues that representation is not completed by the author’s output, but rather is finalized within the reader's act of reading. Thus, the autobiographical nature of ≪The lone room≫ is understood not as determined by whether the actual author provides a self-confession, but as an effect formed through the combination of the enunciative markers organized by the implied author and the reader's reading actions.
