Abstract
This study reexamines the representation of the ‘salaryman’(salaried income earner) in Kim Nam-cheon’s novels during the Total Mobilization period from a micro-political perspective, focusing on the intersection between wartime governmentality and the deployment of capitalist labor power. The white-collar and technical salarymen, who rapidly increased in colonial choseon after the mid-1930s, possessed a unique class mentality distinct from that of peasants and workers. Aspiring to bourgeois cultural life and rationality, they were nevertheless contradictory subjects who navigated self-deprecation and anxiety amidst chronic daily poverty and organizational discrimination.
Through works such as Going to the Sea, The T-Ilbo, and As the Clouds Say, Kim Nam-cheon realistically depicted the 'snobbery' and 'paranoiac inferiority complex' ruling the inner worlds of these salarymen. In doing so, he sharply captured how the mining boom, stock speculation, and wartime productivism ingrained fetishism into the minds of the colonized, while capturing and redistributing their bodies into conformist labor power. Notably, the way these characters collapse into discourses of daily comfort and personal self-cultivation is highly symptomatic. They definitively declare the advent of the ‘economic man’(homo-economicus) seeking economic survival and social advancement within the crevices of a controlled economy.
The representation of the salaryman portrayed by Kim Nam-cheon extends beyond a transient depiction of social customs in the colonial era. It offers a crucial genealogical clue for tracing the 'Korean origins of the capitalist subject,' as it connects directly to the collective identity of the white-collar elite who later drove South Korea's modernization and economic growth after liberation.
