이청준 소설에 나타난 계율의 형식과 구원의 윤리
초록
이 글은 이청준의 소설 ｢벌레 이야기｣, ｢비화밀교｣, 『자유의 문』에 나타난 신(神)의 형상 및 계율의 구조를 짚어보고, 이를 통해 이청준이 지향한 종교적 세계관과 주체의 윤리를 탐구하고자 한다. 이청준에게서 신은 인류가 평안과 안식의 궁극적 보증으로서 상정해 온 전통적 이미지가 아니라, 오히려 그 정반대의 모습―‘반쪽’ 혹은 ‘인색한 구원자’ 등―으로 제시된다. 그의 이러한 특징적 시선은 신의 범형(範型)으로서의 계율을 무조건적 선(善)이라는 관습적 이해에서 벗어나 그 내부에 어떤 균열과 모순을 품은 증상적 형식으로 새롭게 조명하게 한다.
위의 세 작품에 나타난 신의 형식(계율)은 각각 <네 이웃을 사랑하라>, <비밀의 형식을 고수하라>, <스스로를 익명화하라>로 구체화할 수 있다. 이를 인물과의 관계 속에서 짚어보면 다음과 같은 증상적 지점들이 드러나는바, 그것은 첫째, 순수 명령으로서의 계율이 사실상 법의 엄격함을 넘어 한층 더 잔인한 층위에 있다는 것, 둘째, 계율은 때로 어떤 결핍이나 공백을 가리기 위한 일종의 베일로서 작동한다는 것, 셋째, 주체의 실천 여부와는 무관하게 계율은 애초부터 그 형식 자체에 주체의 필연적 실패의 지점을 내재하고 있다는 것이다.
이청준은 계율의 절대적 형식 속에 숨은 이 같은 부정성의 지점을 통해 자신의 종교적 세계관을 드러내는 동시에, 그 틈의 지점을 더 이상 신이 아닌 인간 각자가 스스로 감당해야 할 윤리적 과제로 제시한다. 이는 특히 『자유의 문』의 주영섭을 통해 분명하게 드러나는바, 그것은 주체가 단순히 보편적인 것의 대행자agent가 아니라 그것의 동인agens이 되는 방식을 통해서이다. 주영섭의 이 같은 역할과 의지는, 신의 불가해성과 인간의 윤리적 자각이 교차하는 경계 위에서 이청준이 지향한 주체 및 윤리의 방향을 명확하게 제시한다는 점에서 큰 의의를 지닌다.
Abstract
This study examines the representation of God and the structure of commandments in Yi Chung-jun’s novels to explore his religious worldview and conception of the ethical subject. In works, God is not presented as the traditional image that humanity has assumed as the ultimate guarantor of peace and rest; rather, God appears in a radically opposed form—as a “half-being” or a “stingy savior,” among others. Through this inversion, the divine commandment, as the archetype of God, is revealed not as an unconditional good but as a symptomatic form containing internal fissures and contradictions.
The forms of the divine commandment in the texts are concretized as “Love thy neighbor,” “Maintain the form of secrecy,” and “Anonymize thyself.” These reveal that the commandment exceeds the strictness of the law to a level of cruelty, operates as a veil concealing an inner void, and inscribes within its very form the inevitability of the subject’s failure.
Through these negative moments within the absolute form of the commandment, Yi presents the ethical task as one that must be borne not by God but by human beings themselves. In 『The Gate of Freedom』, Ju Young-seop embodies this idea, not as a mere ‘agent’ of the universal command but as its ‘agens’, enacting an autonomous ethical decision. At this intersection of divine incomprehensibility and human ethical awareness, Yi’s vision of the ethical subject and his orientation toward a new form of religiosity become distinctly manifest.
