이상 소설의 주석학을 위해

이상은 작품에서 문자 실험뿐만 아니라 다양한 표기 형태를 썼다. 그의 낱말들은 실로 다양하며, 그래서 그 의미도 쉽게 확정하기 어렵다. 동일 낱말이 다양한 형태로 나타나기도 하고, 같은 대상이 다른 표기로도 나타나며, 하나의 기표가 다른 의미를 지니기도 한다. 이는 당시 한글맞춤법이 제대로 실행되지 않았고, 또한 우리 글이 표음문자이기 때문에 빚어진 현상이기도 하다.

이상 문학에는 문선과 식자, 인쇄 과정에서 다양한 오류들이 발생했다. 글자가 잘못 배열되거나 글자의 일부만 인쇄 또는 아예 낙자된 경우, 획이 더 들어가 다른 글자처럼 보이는 경우도 있다. 이전 전집 편찬자들은 그러한 부분에 주목하고 글자를 교정하였다. 그러나 잘못 교정되거나 제대로 교정되지 않은 경우, 잘못 해석되거나 미처 해석되지 않은 부분들이 있다.

본고에서는 이상의 소설에 대해 주석학적 연구를 시도하였다. 이전 편찬자들이 ‘회탁’를 ‘오탁’ 또는 ‘희락’으로 보았는데, 이는 흐리고 탁하다는 ‘회탁’이 맞다. 아울러 ‘봉도라지’(봉우리)를 ‘봄도라지’로, ‘그적에’를 ‘그저께’로, ‘교통’을 ‘고통’으로 잘못 해석하기도 하였다. 그리고 ‘압과’(앞과)’를 ‘아파’, ‘덩어리’를 ‘벙어리’로 보는 것도 오류일 것이다. 한편 ‘窃窕淑女’는 ‘窈窕淑女’, ‘장정업시’는 ‘작정업시’, ‘씨인’은 ‘싸인’의 오식으로 보인다. 그리고 ‘도무소용인’은 ‘모도 무소용인’의, ‘단할’은 ‘판단할’의 탈자로, ‘이니는’은 ‘니이는’의 오배열로 보이며, ‘물뿌리’는 ‘빨부리’를, ‘자저간다’는 ‘횟수가 늘어난다’는 의미로 보인다. 이러한 판본의 교감 및 주석 작업으로 좀 더 나은 판본을 구성하고, 어휘에 대한 심층적 해석에 이를 수 있다.

Yi Sang employed not only experimental uses of language but also a wide variety of orthographic forms in his works. His lexical choices are extraordinarily diverse, making their meanings difficult to determine with certainty. The same word appears in various forms, the same object is expressed differently, and one signifier has different meanings. This phenomenon can be attributed in part to the lack of standardized Korean orthography at the time and to the phonetic nature of the Korean writing system.

In Yi Sang’s works, numerous errors occurred during the processes of manuscript selection, typesetting, and printing. These include cases where characters were misarranged, partially printed, or entirely omitted, as well as instances in which additional strokes caused characters to resemble different ones. Previous editors of collected editions paid attention to such issues and attempted to correct the text. However, some passages were either incorrectly emended or insufficiently corrected, resulting in misinterpretations or unresolved ambiguities.

This study attempts a exegetical approach to Yi Sang’s fiction. Earlier editors interpreted ‘hoetak(회탁)’ as ‘otak’ or ‘hirak’, but such readings diverge from the meaning of hoetak as ‘cloudy and turbid’. In addition, ‘bongdoraji(봉도라지), mountain peak)’ was misread as ‘bomdoraji’, ‘geujeoge(그적에)’ as ‘geujeokke(the day before yesterday)’, and ‘gyotong(traffic)’ as ‘gotong’. Likewise, interpreting ‘apgwa(압과)’ as ‘apa(아파)’ and ‘deongeori(덩어리)’ as ‘beongeori(dumb)’ should also be considered errors.

Meanwhile, ‘jeoljo-lady(窃窕淑女)’ should be corrected to ‘yojo-lady(窈窕淑女)’ ‘jangjeongeopsi(장정없이)’ to ‘jakjeongeopsi(작정없이)’, and ‘ssiin(씨인)’ appears to be a misspelling for ‘sign(싸인)’. Furthermore, ‘domusoyongin(도무소용인)’ is understood as a missing letter of ‘modo musoyongin(all useless)’, ‘danhal’ as an missing letter from ‘pandanhall(판단할)’, and ‘inineun(이니는)’ as a misarrangement of ‘niineun(니이는)’. ‘Mulppuri’ is interpreted as ‘pipe(빨부리)’, while ‘jajeoganda(자저간다)’ appears to mean ‘an increase in frequency’. Through such textual revision and annotation work, it has become possible to establish a more reliable edition and in-depth interpretations of vocabulary.
