장혁주 영어 장편소설 『Forlorn Journey』, 『RAJAGRIHA』 연구

작가 활동 후기의 장혁주를 지배하고 있던 것은, 결국 ‘자유’ 혹은 ‘자유의지’에 관한 문제, 즉 ‘자유’란 무엇인가 혹은 사회 내에서 인간은 정말로 독립성과 자율성을 가진 존재인가에 관한 물음이라는 사실이 이 글의 커다란 전제이다. 물론, 60년에 육박하는 긴 작가적 생애 동안 그가 ‘자유’에 대한 글을 집필한 적도 없으며, 그가 작품을 창작하기 위해서 헤겔이나 사르트르 등의 철학적 이론이나 저서를 통해 근대적 의미에서의 자유 개념을 탐색했다는 흔적 역시 찾아보기 어렵다. 다만, 그렇다고 하더라도 노년 시기에 장혁주가 발표한 소설을 비롯한 텍스트 전반에 그가 일본에서 발표했던 이전 작품에서는 볼 수 없었던 한 개인의 자유 혹은 문학의 자율성이나 독립성에 관한 작가의 사상적 지향과 그를 실현하기 위한 작가의 고투가 두드러지게 나타나고 있는 것만은 분명하다. 그리고 노년 시기 그의 작업 혹은 문학적 실천이 특징적인 것은, 이를 위해 근대적 시스템과 담론에서의 것이 아닌, 비(非)근대적 혹은 전근대적인 요소, 즉 ‘종교’의 기원과 교리를 증좌로 삼고 있다는 점이다. 본문에서 자세히 다루겠지만, 장혁주는 천주교와 불교를 포함하여 인도의 시크교 같은 소수 종교의 기원과 역사적 사실까지 탐구하는 등 다양한 종교를 경유하는 방식을 통해 창작 후기 자신의 사상을 나름대로 체계적으로 구체화하고자 시도했다. 이 글의 목적은 이 과정을 추적해 보는 데 있다.

This paper explores the central theme that dominated the later literary period of Korean writer Jang Hyuk-joo: the concept of ‘freedom’ or ‘free will.’ While Jang never explicitly addressed the topic of freedom in his writings, nor did he engage with philosophical texts from figures like Hegel or Sartre, his later works—particularly his English novels such as Forlorn Journey and RAJAGRIHA—reveal a distinct shift in focus. These works demonstrate a strong interest in the autonomy of the individual and the independence of literature, themes not prominently present in his earlier writings published in Japan.

He's late literary career is marked by a philosophical and existential inquiry into whether humans can truly be autonomous within society. Rather than approaching this issue through modern philosophical discourse, Jang explored these questions through religious frameworks. What sets his later works apart is the way he integrates pre-modern or non-modern elements, especially religious ideas, into his narratives. This includes not only well-known religions such as Catholicism and Buddhism but also lesser-known faiths like Sikhism. By delving into the origins, doctrines, and histories of these religions, Jang sought to build a unique conceptual foundation for understanding freedom and autonomy.

The paper argues that Jang's exploration of freedom was not based on theoretical abstraction but on a deeply personal and creative process that aimed to express his evolving worldview. His shift toward religious themes reflects a broader attempt to challenge the constraints of modern systems and to search for meaning and agency outside the dominant discourses of his time.

In sum, this study aims to trace Jang Hyuk-joo’s philosophical development in his later years and to examine how his engagement with various religious traditions helped shape a distinct literary vision centered on individual freedom and literary autonomy.
