두 장의 지도와 김남천의 ‘해방 전후’ : 『사랑의 수족관』과 『1945년 8.15』의 서사 공간 비교를 중심으로

1945년 10월 15일부터 연재를 시작한 김남천의 장편소설 『1945년 8.15』는 해방 직후의 사회상을 실시간으로 담아낸 작품으로서 많은 연구가 이루어져 왔다. 이글에서는 『1945년 8.15』가 식민지 말기에 발표된 『사랑의 수족관』과 연작 관계를 이루고 있음에 주목하여, 두 작품이 일종의 역상(mirror image)으로서의 서사 공간을 형성하고 있음을 밝히고자 한다. 1장에서는 『1945년 8.15』의 연구사를 정리하고, 패전 이후 ‘잿더미로부터의 부흥’이라는 기원의 신화를 해체하는 사카사이 아키토의 일본 전후공간론 연구를 연구 방법론으로서 소개하였다. 2장에서는 『사랑의 수족관』의 서사 공간이 상업과 소비가 이루어지는 경성의 도심부에 한정되어 있음을 밝히고, 이를 ‘수족관’이라는 제목의 의미와 관련해 분석하였다. 3장에서는 서울의 외곽 지역까지 확장된 『1945년 8.15』의 서사 공간을 지도 그리기(mapping) 방법을 이용해 제시하고, 각 장소들의 의미를 분석하였다. 4장에서는 작중 등장하는 세 집단, 즉 친일 자본가 집단, 학생 집단, 그리고 좌익 운동가 집단이 모두 일제가 남긴 적산을 통해 세력을 구축하고자 하는 양상을 전후공간론의 관점에서 분석하였다. 5장에서는 『사랑의 수족관』에 비해 10배 가까이 확장된 『1945년 8.15』의 서사 공간에서 이동의 테크놀로지로서 ‘자동차’가 중요한 역할을 수행하고 있음에 주목하여, 작중에 나타난 고급 승용차와 화물자동차, 그리고 미군 군용차의 의미를 분석하였다. 이러한 분석을 통해 『1945년 8.15』가 좌우의 이념대립과 사회주의의 승리라는 도식화된 서사로 수렴되는 것이 아니라, 다양한 주체들의 목소리와 욕망을 중층화된 도시공간 속에 배치하고 있음을 밝혔다.

Kim Nam-cheon's novel August 15, 1945, which began serialization on October 15, 1945, is a work that captures the social conditions immediately after liberation in real time, and has been the subject of much research. This article focuses on the serial relationship between August 15, 1945, and Aquarium of Love, which was published at the end of the colonial period, and aims to reveal that the two works form a narrative space as mirror images. Chapter 1 summarizes the history of research on August 15, 1945 and introduces Sakasai Akito's research on postwar space of Japan, which deconstructs the myth of ‘rebirth from the ashes’ after the defeat as a research methodology. Chapter 2 reveals that the narrative space of Aquarium of Love is limited to the downtown area of Seoul, where commerce and consumption take place, and analyzes this in relation to the meaning of the title ‘aquarium.’ Chapter 3 uses mapping to present the narrative space of August 15, 1945, which extends to the outskirts of Seoul, and analyzes the meanings of each location. Chapter 4 analyzes the three groups that appear in the work—pro-Japanese capitalists, students, and left-wing activists—from the perspective of postwar space theory, showing how they all sought to build their power through the assets left behind by the Japanese Empire. Chapter 5 focuses on the important role played by the ‘automobile’ as a technology of mobility in the narrative space of August 15, 1945, which is nearly ten times larger than that of Aquarium of Love, and analyzes the meanings of luxury cars, trucks, and US military jeeps that appear in the novel. Through this analysis, it was revealed that August 15, 1945, did not converge into a stereotypical narrative of ideological conflict between left and right and the victory of socialism, but rather placed the voices and desires of various subjects in a multi-layered urban space.
