‘젊은 문학’을 위하여 : 염상섭 후기 ‘연애소설’을 중심으로

본고는 염상섭이 1950년대 후반에 발표했던 소설을 통해서 그의 ‘연애소설’에 대한 의미를 살펴보았다. 전후문학의 색채가 신세대 문학가로서 점철되는 1950년대 후반에 이르자 염상섭의 소설은 기성 문학의 한계성으로 논의되었다. 염상섭은 자신의 작품이 기성의 ‘노쇠 문학’이라는 비판에 맞서 젊은 비평가들과 ‘젊은 문학’에 대한 문학적 논쟁을 하였다. 그 후 1959년 1월 『사상계』에 ｢싸우면서도 사랑은｣을 발표했다. 이 작품을 통해서 염상섭이 1950년대 후반에 추구하고자 했던 ‘젊은 문학’과 이에 대한 구체적인 실천으로 ‘연애소설’의 방식이 드러난다. ｢싸우면서도 사랑은｣은 1950년대 후반, 새로운 문학적 국면을 맞이한 염상섭의 현실을 반영하는 작품이라는 점에서 중요한 의미를 내포하고 있다. 그러나 ‘연애소설’에 대한 염상섭의 창작 의지와는 별개로 기존에 자신이 추구해 왔던 기성의 문학적 경향이 무의식적으로 발산됨에 따라 그가 기획했던 연애소설은 방향성을 잃고 만다. 다만 이 소설을 통해서 과거의 문학 지향적 틀을 내재화하고 있었던 노년 작가의 자화상이 발견될 뿐이다.

This thesis examined the meanings of Yeom Sang-Seop’s ‘romantic novel’ through his novel released in the late 1950s. In the 1950s when the color of postwar literature was dotted as new generation writers, Yeom Sang-Seop’s novels were discussed as the limitation of pre-existing literature. Yeom Sang-Seop had literary argument about ‘young literature’ with young critics by facing the criticism in which his works were the pre-existing ‘old literature’. After that, he published [Love While Arguing] at 『Sasanggye』 in January 1959. Through this work, the ‘young literature’ that Yeom Sang-seop wanted to pursue in the late 1950s and the method of ‘love novel’ as a specific practice of this are revealed. ｢Love While Arguing｣ has an important meaning in that it is a work that reflects the reality of Yeom Sang-seop, who was entering a new literary phase in the late 1950s. However, his romantic novel he planned lost the direction as the pre-existing literary tendency he previously pursued was unconsciously released, separately from his will to create ‘romantic novel’. This novel just shows an old writer’s portrait internalizing the literarily-oriented frame of the past.
