제3의 공간과 아메리칸 드림 : 포스트콜로니얼리즘 시각에서 『조용한 오딧세이』의 정체성 재구축

이민작가와 이산집단에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있는 오늘날, 민족과 문화 정체성에 대한 연구의 중요성이 주목을 받고 있다. 포스트콜로니얼리즘의 대표적인 학자 호미 바바는 ‘제3의 공간’이라는 개념을 제시하여 이산집단이 겪게 되는 여러가지 어려움을 극복할 수 있는 새로운 방향을 강조했다. 또한, 정처 없이 떠돌아다니는 이방인들과 이산 집단을 위한 안식처를 마련했다. 한국계 미국 문학은 세계 이산문학의 중요한 영역으로서, 대표적인 한국계 미국인 작가 메어리 팩 리는 자서전 『조용한 오딧세이』에서 미국에 정착한 이민 3세대 간의 이야기를 다루었다. 이산의 주체로서 소설 속 등장인물과 두 문화의 애매모호한 관계는 이들이 문화 협상 과정에서 지속적으로 낡은 정체성을 해체하고 새로운 이산 정체성을 재구축하며, 각기 다른 이산 경험 속에서 자아성장을 이룬다. 자서전 『조용한 오딧세이』는 다양한 문화 환경에서 ‘제3의 공간’을 구축하며 새로운 시대적 배경에서 두 문화 사이의 경계를 헤매다가, 결국 소외된 ‘타자’의 이미지를 타파하고 이산된 한국인들의 생활을 깊이 반영하였다.

In today's world where immigrant writers and diaspora groups are receiving widespread attention, the exploration of ethnic and cultural identity is becoming increasingly nonnegligible. The concept of the “third space” proposed by Homi K. Bhabha, a representative figure of postcolonial theory, has provided a good remedy for the various confusions faced by diaspora groups and provided a place for “displaced” outsiders and displaced groups. American Korean literature is an important branch of the diaspora literature in the world. Mary Paik Lee, as an outstanding representative of Korean American writers, tells the story of the first generation of immigrants settling down and taking root in the United States in her autobiography, The Quiet Odyssey. As the subjects of the diaspora, the characters in the novel have a vague relationship with two cultures, which enables them to constantly deconstruct their old identities and reconstruct new diaspora identities in the process of cultural negotiation, achieving self-growth through their different diaspora experiences. The autobiography timely constructs the “third space” in a multicultural context. The story in the book depicts the diaspora population wandering on the edge of two cultures in a new era, ultimately breaking away from the marginalized image of the “other” and giving the diaspora Koreans a profound reflection.
