식민지 시기 대중소설에 반영된 서구문화의 수용 양상 : 김말봉의 『찔레꽃』을 중심으로

본 연구는 식민지 시기 폭발적인 대중의 사랑을 받았던 대중소설 『찔레꽃』의 분석을 통해 자생적인 근대가 아닌 왜곡된 근대, 그러나 완숙한 식민지 자본주의의 메타모포시스적인 공간인 경성에서 당대의 서구문화가 작품 안에 어떻게 수용되었는지, 그리고 그것이 대중의 정서에 어떤 방식으로 작동했는지 살펴보고자 한다.
1930년대 대표적인 대중소설인 김말봉의 『찔레꽃』은 그 이전의 작품에서는 볼 수 없었던 변화한 경성의 새로운 문물과 새로운 상황의 전시를 통해 대중의 흥미를 이끌어냈다. 특히 작품 속에 형상화된 자본주의적 소비의 완성판인 백화점은 화려한 자본과 공간의 전시를 통해 욕망을 불러일으키고 백화점이라는 근대공간이 제공하는 자본주의적 소비욕망과 함께 서구문화를 받아들이고자 열망하는 독자의 바람을 보여주었다. 이와 함께 근대적 주거에 대한 대중의 욕망을 잘 보여주는 문화주택이라는 신식 공간을 통해 새로운 삶을 욕망하는 대중의 정서를 보여주었다.
『찔레꽃』이 대중의 사랑을 받았던 또 하나의 이유는 작품 안에 다양한 서구적 삶의 양상이 드러나 있고, 그러한 모습이 현실에서 도피를 꿈꾸는 사람들의 흥미를 불러 일으켰기 때문이다. 경제적인 상황에 구애받지 않는 해외여행의 이국체험, 이국적인 생활방식과 서구적인 식생활, 파티문화, 승마, 핑퐁, 보트타기 같은 부르주아적인 취미, 헐리우드와 거의 동시에 상영하고 있는 영화의 관람 등을 통해 다양한 서구적 생활의 파노라마를 보여주고 대중의 삶의 변화에 많은 영향을 끼쳤다. 또한 1930년대에 이르면 ‘돈이냐 사랑이냐’는 선택의 딜레마에 빠지지 않으며 자연스럽게 돈에 대한 욕망과 일상적인 삶의 욕망을 표출한다. 이러한 인식의 변화는 근대적 공간으로의 전환과 일상적인 삶의 변화가 가져온 메타모포시스(변화, 변형)의 현상이라고 할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This research is an analysis of the beloved novel during the colonial period, ‘The wild Rose’ by Kim, Malbong(김말봉), on how the western culture was accepted in the city of Kyungsung(경성), where the city was metamophotic space according to mature colonial capitalism and was going distortedly modern, and how the western culture affected the readers.
The popular novel ‘The wild Rose’ during the 1930's pulled interests from the crowd by displaying the new look of ‘Kyungsung(경성)’ with new products and occasions that did not exist in the previous popular novels. Especially,the department store shaped in the novel expresses the will of readers that wanted to accept and spend the western culture by displaying fancy capitals and places. Also with unfamiliar places such as Munhwajutaek(modern housing), the novel showed the emotions and feelings that the public had desired.
Another reason why ‘The wild Rose’ was beloved by the public was because the novel displayed various aspects of western lifestyles, and it had pulled the readers attraction of whom wanting to escape from the reality. Traveling abroad regardless of their financial status, exotic lifestyles and western dietary life, parties, horse-back riding, ping-pong, high-class hobbies such as boat riding, watching movies from Hollywood almost at the same time as local, etc. With such events, the novel showed the panorama of western lifestyles and influenced very much in change of the public's lifestyle. Also, when the time reaches the 1930's, people do not fall in the dilema of money or love, but rather naturally express their desire in money and lifestyle. This change of perception could be defined phenomenon of metamophosis brought by changes into modern space and changes in lifestyle of the public.
