오정희의 「불꽃놀이」에 나타난 주제의식 연구

이 논문은 오정희의 중편 「불꽃놀이」를 중심으로 주제의식 및 작중인물의 내면세계와 갈등양상을 파악하고, 작품 속에 드러나고 있는 이미지의 상징성을 고찰하였다. 또한 이 작품 속에 내재해 있는 작가의 삶에 대한인식과 사회현실인식을 추적하고자 하였다.

오정희 소설에서 아버지의 부재는 초기 작품에서부터 후기 작품에 이르기까지 반복적으로 드러나고 있다. 중편 「불꽃놀이」에서도 아버지의 부재로 기인하는 작중인물들의 실존적 고독의 문제와 정체성의 혼돈, 불안의식이 형상화되고 있다. 특히 작가는 고주몽 신화를 도입하여, ‘뿌리 찾기’를 갈망하는 영조의 내면세계와 아버지를 찾아가는 고주몽의 내면세계를 병치시키고 있다.

이 작품 속에서 개별 주체들이 가지고 있는 불안의식은 광기의 역사 속에서 형성된 집단무의식과 긴밀하게 연결되고 있다. 전쟁 체험에 대한 기억은 관희에게 집단무의식의 대표적 발화현상인 ‘에비’를 만남으로써 불안의식으로 극대화된다. 혈액암을 앓고 있는 명약사에게 전쟁의 기억은 몰살과 떼죽음의 공포로 내재해 있다.

이 작품에서 작가는 ‘불꽃놀이’의 이면에 가리워진 정치적 은폐와 왜곡,폭력성들을 작중인물들을 통하여 직·간접적으로 형상화하고 있다. 이는 제5공화국의 광기어린 정치적 상황에 대한 작가의 현실비판의식의 발로라고 볼 수 있다. 즉 과거의 기억이 형성한 집단무의식은 현재의 폭압적인 정치적 상황과 맞물리면서 더 큰 불안의식으로 작중인물들에게 증폭되는것이다.

그럼에도 불구하고 과거, 현재, 미래는 거대한 역사의 흐름 속에서 부침을 거듭하며 진보적으로 나아갈 수 있다는 작가의 역사인식도 함께 보여주고 있다. 작가가 고구려 건국신화인 고주몽 신화를 도입하여 ‘뿌리 찾기’를 시도하는 이유도 폭압과 금기의 시대에서 혼돈을 거듭하고 있는 당대민중들에게 우리 민족의 혼 또는 ‘뿌리 찾기’를 통해 희망을 제시하고 싶었던 작가의식의 한 반영이라고 본다. 따라서 「불꽃놀이」는 작가의 현실비판의식을 직·간접적으로 드러내고 있다는 점에서 오정희 문학세계를 고찰하는데 중요하게 다루어져야 할 작품이라고 볼 수 있다

This paper revolves around Oh Jung-hee’s short story <Fireworks>; it seeks to understand the inner world of characters and the thematic aspects in the story that deal with psychological conflict; it also looks into the symbolism of the imagery that is revealed in the short story. Also, this paper seeks to trace the writer’s perception of life and awareness of social reality.

The absence of the father figure in Oh Jung-hee’s novels is repeatedly revealed from the early works to the later works. In the short story <Fireworks>, confusion stemming from existential solitude, identity diffusion and the consciousness of discomfort of the characters arise from the absence of the father.

In particular, the writer introduces the myth of Gojumong, juxtaposing the inner world of Yeongjo, who aspires to ‘find the root’, and the inner world of Gojumong, who is looking for his father.

In particular, the sense of anxiety of individual subjects in this work is closely connected with the collective unconsciousness formed in the history of insanity. The memory of Gwan hui’s war experience is maximized to consciousness of discomfort by encountering ‘Evie’, which is a representative utterance phenomenon of collective unconsciousness. To Myeongyaksa, who is suffering from hematologic malignancy, the memory of war is inherent in his fear of massacre and death.

In this work, the writer is embodying the political concealment, distortions and violence that are hidden behind ‘Fireworks’ directly or indirectly through the characters. This can be seen as a result of the writer's criticism of the reality regarding the mad political situation of the Fifth Republic, which was dominated by military dictatorship. In other words, the collective unconsciousness formed by the memory of the past is amplified in the characters to become a greater sense of discomfort combined with the current repressive political situation.

Nevertheless, past, present and the future show the writer’s historical awareness that she can progressively go forward through the vicissitudes of history. The reason why the writer tried to ‘find the root’ by introducing the myth of Gojumong, which is the birth myth of a nation, was to reflect the writer’s consciousness about hope through the souls of people or ‘finding the root’ for the people of those days who endure repeated chaos in an era of oppression and taboo. Therefore, <Fireworks> can be regarded as an important work to be considered in reviewing Oh Jung-hee's literary world in that it shows the artist's criticism of reality and expandability of the will to respond to reality
