이광수 문학에 나타난 근대의식의 양상 : 주요 단편과 『무정』·『사랑』을 중심으로

이 연구는 이광수와 그의 문학에 나타난 근대의식의 양상을 구체적으로 살펴보는 데 목표를 두었다. 당대의 시대적 환경과 작가로서의 대응방식은 모두 근대성 또는 근대의식이라는 명제와 밀접하게 맞물려 있기에, 이는 한국 근대사와 문학사의 의미를 유기적으로 탐색하는 일이 된다. 그리하여 먼저 그 시대와 작가 및 작품세계를 살펴보고, 근대적 계몽기의 한 시대를 풍미하며 작가로서의 생애 절반을 일관한 근대의식이 어떻게 소설 작품 속에 반영되어 있는가를 검토하였다. 대상작품으로 주요 단편들과 장편 『무정』 및 『사랑』을 선택하였는데, 이들이 이광수 문학의 근대의식과 그 다양한 양상을 가장 잘 보여줄 것으로 판단되기 때문이다.

이광수의 단편들은 장편에 비해 주목을 덜 받았던 것이 사실이다. 물론 단편의 수에 비해 장편이 더 많았기 때문이기도 하지만, 단편들보다 장편들이 미학적 성취도가 높았기 때문이기도 하다. 그러나 그의 단편 역시 당시로서는 선구적이었으며 가장 현대적이고 참신한 문장이었음을 간과해서는 안 된다. 단편소설이 많지 않았던 시대에 그 정도의 소설 형식을 취했다는 점만으로도 선구자적인 공적이 아닐 수 없다. 여기에서는 이광수의 괄목할만한 단편 8편을 살펴보았다. 이 단편들은 그동안 연구자들의 주목을 많이 받은 작품을 가려 뽑았다. 근대성의 언덕을 넘어 새로운 시대의 향방을 비추는 불빛으로서 그 자격이 약여한 작품들이다.

한국문학에 있어 신소설을 넘어 근현대문학의 시발을 알린 장편 『무정』은, 시대의식과 민중의 고민을 포착한 리얼리즘의 소설이 아닌 계몽문학 또는 이상주의 문학으로 규정되고 또한 내용과 형식면에서 신소설의 범위를 완전히 벗어나지 못하는 측면이 없지 않았다. 그러나 세련된 언문일치의 문장으로 구성이나 대화 장면 묘사 등 현대소설적인 조건을 갖추고 봉건적 잔재를 극복했다는 점에서 3·1 운동 이후 새로운 한국 소설을 가능케 한 작품으로 평가 받는다. 이 소설에 나타난 근대의식은 이광수 개인의 것이기 보다는 당대 사회가 새롭게 변화하는 그 방향과 촉수를 그려낸 하나의 상징에 해당하는 것이다.

『무정』이 그러했던 것처럼 장편소설 『사랑』 또한 고소설이나 신소설의 전통적 서술 방식에 젖어 있던 당대의 문학적 감각에 일대 혁신을 요구했다. 이광수가 개간하고 있던 미지의 세계와 그 도구로서의 대사 및 묘사의 방법 등속은, 가히 획기적이고 폭발적인 감응력을 불러일으킬 수밖에 없었다. 이를 축약하여 우리 문학의 근대성을 개척한 공로로 일컫는 것이며, 비록 오늘날의 세련된 시각으로 검증할 때 삼류 통속소설의 외양이 명백하다 하더라도 그러한 확정된 성과로 인하여 이광수와 그의 문학을 우리 문학사의 소중한 한 징검다리로 받아들이게 되는 것이다.

This study aims to examine the aspect of modern consciousness shown in Lee Kwang-Soo’s literary works. The social circumstances of the time and his reaction are all intimately related to modernism and modern consciousness; exploring his works is the same as looking into Korean modern history as well as the literary background. First, the generational impact, the writer himself and his literary world, the second is to closely investigate his modern consciousness reflected in different works. Major short stories, novel 『Heartless』 and 『Love』 were chosen.

The short stories were hidden beneath the novels. They were short in numbers and less of aesthetic achievement. Yet the style of composition was new to the era and opened a paradigm of short story writing. The study chose the major eight which are worth to look into and in the spotlight of researchers. These are more than displaying the modern ideas but suggesting a fresh start of another generation.

『Heartless』 which was the first in modern Korean literature as a novel is not about realism discussing periodical awareness and public agony but enlightenment and idealism. Also, it still resides in the category of New Novel for its content and format. Yet the refined sentences and the description of a conversation which are the factors of modern novel and overcoming of feudalism in the story all brought together to make it as a new Korean novel after March 1 Independence Movement. The modern consciousness shown in the story does not belong to the writer himself but signifies the direction of coming era.

As 『Heartless』, 『Love』 also stands up for the innovative style of writing. The unknown field Lee Kwang-Soo was reprinting and the equipment such as the dialogue and way to portray it was ground-breaking and drew explosive response from the public. In sum, his contribution is developing the modernism in Korean literature and becoming a precious stepping-stone even with the third-rated commonality from the perspective of twenty-first century.
