본 논문은 선행연구에서 연속 관계로 간주된 ｢삼대｣와 ｢무화과｣의 불연속성에 주목하여 논의를 전개했다. 연재가 중단된 ｢삼대｣의 속편을 쓰는 일은 검열 당국에 정면으로 맞서는 행보로 비칠 수 있어서 염상섭은 ｢삼대｣의 인물들을 개명하여 ｢무화과｣에 등장시켰다. 염상섭의 사상적 답보 상태도 ｢삼대｣와 ｢무화과｣ 사이의 불연속성을 이해하는 데 고려되어야 한다. 완식의 논설에서 추후 확인되는 대로 ｢삼대｣의 덕기가 동정자로서 도달한 수준을 극복할 만한 사상적 진전이 ｢무화과｣를 연재할 즈음의 염상섭에게 마련되지 못한 상태였다. 표현과 관련한 외적 조건의 악화와 염상섭 자신의 사상적 답보 상태는 ｢무화과｣를 전작에 미치지 못하는 수준에 머물게 했다. ｢무화과｣는 주제와 방법의 면에서 전반부와 후반부가 이질적이라는 결함을 노출한다. 주제의 면에서 전반부가 원영의 연애에 치중한다면 후반부는 문경과 정애와 완식을 통해 주체의 자기 인식과 항일 투쟁을 다룬다. 방법의 면에서 종전까지 염상섭이 상용해온 고백체와 재현과 논설과 추리는 전반부에서 거의 유보된다. 그로써 서사는 사건 위주로 전개되고 인물들은 단순한 성격의 소유자에 머문다. 그에 반해 후반부에서는 그 방법들이 적절하게 사용됨으로써 인물의 내면이 투시되고 사건들의 사실성이 제고되고 주제는 설득력을 획득한다. 그처럼 서로 이질적인 전반부와 후반부가 ｢무화과｣를 별개의 두 작품이 합본 된 상태로 보이게 한다. ｢삼대｣에 대해 ｢무화과｣가 보인 답보와 퇴행의 구체적 양상이 본 논문에서 검토되었다.

This paper made a discussion by paying attention to the discontinuity between The Three Generations(삼대) and The Fig(무화과), which were considered continuous relationship in previous studies. Writing a sequel to The Three Generations, where the series was suspended, could be seen as a choice directly against the censorship authorities, so Yeom Sang-seop renamed the characters of The Three Generations and presented them in The Fig. The ideological standstill of Yeom Sang-seop should also be considered in understanding the discontinuity between The Three Generations and The Fig. As confirmed later in the argument of Wansik of The Fig, Yeom Sang-seop was not able to make any ideological progress to overcome the level at which Deokgi in The Three Generations reached as a sympathizer. The deterioration of external conditions related to expression and the ideological standstill of Yeom Sang-seop stopped The Fig at a level that fell short of the previous work. The Fig exposes the structural flaw that the first and second half are heterogeneous in terms of theme and method. In terms of theme, if the first half focuses on Wonyoung's love affair, The second half deals with the subject's self-awareness and anti-Japanese struggle through Mungyeong, Jeongae, and Wansik. In terms of method, Yeom Sang-seop's confession style, reproduction, editorial, and reasoning, which have been used until the writing of The Three Generations, are almost reserved in the first half. As a result, the narrative develops around events, and the characters remain as simple personalities. On the other hand, in the second half, the methods are appropriately used, so that the inner side of the characters is seen through, the reality of the events is improved, and the theme acquires persuasion. As such, the first half and the second half, which are different from each other, make The Fig seem to be a combination of two separate works. In this paper, the specific aspects of the standstill and regression observed in The Fig in the relation to The Three Generations were discussed.
