이문열의 『황제를 위하여』는 그동안 한국판 『돈키호테』로, 혹은 동양적 논리의 승리를 그린 전통주의적 소설로 읽혀왔다. 이 논문은 이 두 입장을 비판적으로 수용하면서, 시대착오적 환상에 빠진 돈키호테형 바보 주인공이라는 설정과 그 주인공의 이념적 기반을 이루는 동양 담론이 모두 분단 이후 특수한 정치적인 상황 속에서 말하기 어려운 한국의 현대사에 대해 발언할 수 있는 자유의 공간을 확보하기 위한 문학적 장치로서 기능한다는 것을 보여주고자 한다. 신군부의 쿠데타에서 광주의 비극, 새로운 군사독재 체제의 성립으로 이어진 1980년의 정치적 급변기에 연재되기 시작한 이 소설은 1980년의 경험이 드러낸 한국 사회의 모순과 갈등을 이해하기 위해 한국 현대사 전체를 반추해보려는 시도로서, 정감록의 조잡한 신앙과 동양 담론의 언어와 통속적 연의체라는 외피 속에서 한민족이 20세기에 겪은 비극의 역사를 펼쳐 보이면서 그 비극을 낳은 외세와 근대적 지배 이념을 비판한다. 물론 한계도 존재하지만, 그 속에서도 80년대를 풍미한 민중 이념과 대결하면서 점차 보수적이고 우파적인 작가로 자리매김되기 이전의 이문열의 정치적 태도가 드러난다.

This study examines critically two conflicting views on Lee Mun-yol's “Hail to the Emperor,” namely the interpretation of the novel as a Korean version of “Don Quixote” and as a retro novel celebrating the victory of the Eastern philosophy over the Western, and shows that both the quixotic hero who is stuck in his anachronistic illusion and his Eastern philosophical discourse function as a kind of literary device which makes it possible to say about the complicated modern Korean history in the time of political oppression and anticommunism. The novel, serialized from 1980 till 1982, can be seen as an attempt to reflect the entire Korean modern history to understand the conflicts and contradictions of Korean society which led to a new military coup and the tragedy of Gwangju in 1980. Under the cover of pseudoreligous faith, Eastern philosophical discourse and vulgar-archaic narrative style, the novel presents the tragic history of Korean people in the 20th century and criticizes the foreign powers and their modern ruling ideologies that gave rise to the Korean tragedy.
